Clinical duties To provide, to a high standard, the full range of specialist diagnosis, treatment and care to patients attending the Emergency Department, and play a full part in the development of Emergency Medicine within the Trust, in conjunction with the lead clinician for Emergency Medicine. You will participate in an on-call rota to provide emergency cover. When not on-call, we may in exceptional circumstances ask you to return to site for emergencies if we are able to contact you. You are not, however, required to be available for such eventualities.
Continuing Professional Development & Research The Trust recognises the importance of continuing development. As such we encourage senior staff to give priority to their continuing professional development with thirty days of study leave over each 3 year period available for this. We have an onsite Academy run in conjunction with both the University of Bristol and Plymouth, and staffed by four full-time administrative staff, alongside a well-stocked library with access to electronic journals and 3 full-time librarians. We encourage knowledge sharing across the department and trust, with weekly meetings for both hospital staff and general practitioners.
As a Department we are engaged in several on-going projects, and research is strongly encouraged, particularly when supporting your professional development and the service development of the department. The Taunton and Somerset Research and Development Consortium Executive Group manages research within the Trust, giving general advice, training, and provides support for individual projects. To further support you in the preparation of material for lectures and publications we also have a full-time medical photographer. The department has produced a number of publications in peer reviewed journals, and is currently participating in a number of multi-centre research studies.
You will also benefit from the advice from other consultants in the team who include a member of the RCEM research committee. Educational Supervision and Teaching You will get to be involved with teaching and training junior doctors, ACPs and ENPs, helping with both their professional and personal development. Our Consultants ensure that the junior doctors in their care are not overwhelmed by clinical commitments, or overburdened by responsibilities inappropriate to the experience required. You will also be responsible for the assessment and appraisal of trainees under their supervision and must keep the Clinical and/or College Tutor aware of any problems that may arise.
Teaching junior medical staff on our weekly training programme and supervising training in the Department, you will also share in the teaching of medical students, nursing staff and ambulance personnel, with protected teaching for F2/ST1-2 and Middle Grade staff provided on Wednesday afternoons. Alongside this, ED provides teaching for Acute Medicine and Surgical trainees, supporting the Trusts range of Life Support courses, and participating in the hospital Grand Rounds, giving 4 presentations each year.
