The Ministry of Defence (MOD) is a central government department with a mission to protect our country and provide the ultimate guarantee of its security and independence, as well as helping to protect its values and interests abroad.
To do this we have an annual budget of almost £40 billion and a workforce comprising 193,000 people, almost 59,000 of whom are civilians. We currently manage more than £11 billion of spend every year.
Our work really matters; we offer engaging roles which have a direct impact on the quality of services we provide. We have jobs in policy, finance, HR, IS/IT, commercial and project management and all the types of jobs you would expect to find in a government department, or indeed in the private sector. There are many opportunities to develop and progress both within MOD and across the wider Civil Service, whether you’re a permanent appointee or an interim.
**As a Technical Author, your main responsibilities would be**:
- Actively participate in planning and briefing meetings
- gather and analyse the information needs of the user from the researcher
- gather and analyse the information needs of the core content from the researcher
- collaborate with technical staff, project technical authority, lead technical reviewer and project management staff to clarify any technical /content issues
- Work within the current existing review process / chain effectively
In terms of presenting the information:
- organise information according to the target audience’s needs
- write and edit text
- commission, coordinate or prepare illustrations
- index and catalogue material in accordance with the authorities knowledge management processes.
Related administration may involve:
- working on and servicing multiple projects simultaneously
**Skills Required**:
- a feel for words (skilled wordsmith) and a good command of grammar and vocabulary
- knowledge and experience of styles and content of academic journal papers, including formal referencing approaches
- the ability to express instructions clearly and briefly in simple language to colleagues
- a concern for verbal consistency and an appreciation of tone and style
- good documentation skills and the ability to produce visually attractive instructional material
- interpersonal and communication skills to effectively gather information
- an ability to grasp and structure large amounts of information and anticipate the reader's knowledge gaps
- an enquiring mind with attention to detail
- editorial judgement
- accuracy and a methodical approach to work
- the ability to mix creativity with objectivity
- the ability to work to tight schedules
- excellent planning and organisational skills
- analytical and questioning skills to get information from experts
- the ability to work successfully as part of a multidisciplinary team
- a good understanding of computer based drafting, editing, and other documentation tools and other communication / sharing platforms i.e. wiki etc
