As part of the wider team in general practice, General Practice Assistants provide a support role, carrying out administrative tasks, combined in some areas with basic clinical duties. They can help to free up GPs time and contribute to the smooth running of appointments, improving patients experience in the surgery.Explaining treatment procedures to patients. Helping the GP by triaging acute illness while the GP can continue with their consultation(s). Support the GP with immunisations/wound care.

Personal qualities Essential A strong interest in health and social care Awareness of infection & hygiene control Qualifications Essential Must have an experience in HCA qualifications A good level of literacy and numeracy Functional skills test Clean driving license required A high level of skill in good patient care and working with the public Experience in recording medical details Experience of performing blood test Experience in referring/debriefing to senior colleagues where appropriate Experience of monitoring and reviewing asthma, COPD & diabetic checks. Common aliments of triaging UTI/URTI Home visits for housebound patients Experience of obtaining, testing and reporting specimens and samples Experince in wound care Experience of HCA common examination procedures Dipping urine, taking blood pressure, ECGs and phlebotomy Skills and knowledge Essential Good communication skills, including listening and writing Observational skills Knowledge of how to prepare a safe, hygienic and secure environment for patient assessment Able to modify practice and approach according to patients needs A good understanding of data protection, GDPR and patient confidentiality Desirable Understand legislation, policies, procedures and systems relating to prevention and control of infections including the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) An understanding of mental health and wellbeing An understanding of recording and reporting significant events and incidents Other requirements Enhanced Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) check Maintains confidentiality at all times
