**Job summary**:
The Principal Health Protection Practitioner (PHPP) has a key leadership role within the multi-disciplinary team and will have day to day operational leadership responsibility to ensure the team work collaboratively and effectively in the management of incidents and outbreaks of infectious and non-infectious environmental hazards. The post holder will work both collaboratively and autonomously, with authority, using advanced knowledge and skills, to help develop and deliver services across professional, functional, and geographical boundaries through a networked approach. This involves acting as a catalyst for change in practice and service development, appropriately challenging boundaries to identify innovative solutions that best meet the needs of the service, stakeholders, and staff.

The post holder will actively engage in the strategic work of the locality/patch-based health protection team deputising where appropriate and will lead defined areas of work including regional and national workstreams in agreement with the UKHSA Regional Director.

The post holder may be expected to work across regional sites, providing leadership and development to the service.

**Job description**:
1. Work autonomously within professional boundaries to provide advanced specialist practitioner knowledge and advice in health protection in the following domains;
- communicable diseases
- infection prevention and control
- immunisation and vaccination
- healthcare associated infection
- non-communicable environmental hazards
- health emergency planning

2. Lead and co-ordinate new initiatives in the prevention and management of communicable diseases and community acquired infections involving key professionals in primary and secondary care.

3. Co-ordinate work of primary, secondary health and residential care to ensure high level of care to the relevant population, including the risk assessment of infection and initiation of investigations and interventions to control and reduce the spread of infection.

4. Provide expert advice and opinion to colleagues in relation to health protection where a high level of patient complexity may require an expert analysis of appropriate assessment, treatment and management options.

5. Manage a complex caseload requiring experience and specialist knowledge. Use own detailed knowledge to inform sound judgements for case management and provide consultancy to wider teams.

6. Develop, co-ordinate and oversee systems to review and follow-up patients referred/notified to ensure continuity of care, treatment and the prevention of recurring infections/diseases.

7. Ensure that relevant advice and information is given to patients and relatives in relation to infection and communicable disease prevention and control and non-infectious environmental hazards and that this information is evidence based and regularly reviewed, updated and promoted.

8. Contribute to the UKHSA response during incidents in line with UKHSAs Emergency Planning and Resilience Response (EPRR) arrangements as part of the Centre’s responsibilities under the Civil Contingencies Act.

9. Contribute to and support the UKHSA Centre’s input into Emergency Planning arrangements.

10. Lead and coordinate defined areas of work as agreed with the Deputy Director for Health Protection e.g. on specific communicable diseases, non-infectious environmental hazards, quality and training issues.

11. May be required to participate in a local on call rota at regional or national level as required.

**UKHSA offers hybrid working for its employees**

Whilst the role will be based in one of our UKHSA offices, there will be opportunities for an element of working from home. The balance between home and workplace working is to be agreed with the line manager, determined primarily by business need and in line with departmental policy.

Some business travel may be required to other UKHSA offices. Business travel between base location and any other UKHSA offices will be covered under the UKHSA Travel and Expenses policy.

Please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas. Relocation expenses are not available.
