We are looking for a Public Engagement Officer with a curiosity about engaging diverse audiences with science and technology to join our Daresbury Laboratory Public Engagement team, which is a member of the wider National Laboratories Public Engagement group. The public engagement team at DL deliver a vibrant programme of activities both at the Laboratory and across the Northwest region. We strive to share the wonder of the ground breaking science and technology carried out by STFC with a wide audience, giving particular focus to reaching groups who are currently underserved and underrepresented within STEM.
**List of Duties /Work Programme /Responsibilities**:
- Organise events and activities: linked to the programmes above working systematically and maintaining well-structured records of plans, resource and event materials, risk assessments and data that are visible to other team members and the PE Programme Manager.
- Communicate effectively: with audiences of different ages, STEM literacy, or social / cultural backgrounds with the ability to inspire and engage, whilst valuing and taking on feedback to be a more effective practitioner
- Contribute knowledge of Public Engagement and STFC science and technology areas: to ensure resources highlight our most engaging stories and are factually accurate.
- Collaborate effectively: (both written and verbally) to ensure that events and activities meet the needs of those being engaged; maintain good relationships with audiences, partner organisations, stakeholders and colleagues including but not limited to; members of the public, community group-leaders, primary school teachers, and staff and students at Daresbury Laboratory and the wider campus
- Staff Support: Supervise and / or mentor staff and other volunteers during the preparation and delivery of events or as part of staff training programmes
- Review and reflect on work delivered: recording and addressing lessons learnt (with support from the Line Manager), and evaluating events and activities (including devising, collecting, undertaking simple analyses, reporting of programme performance and evaluation data, and sharing successes).
- Programme Planning: work with senior colleagues to design and implement a new public engagement delivery plan at Daresbury Laboratory and within the broader STFC National Laboratories public engagement group.
- Oversee storage and regular maintenance of public engagement team resources both online and within the visitor centre.
- Safe Working: Be responsible for the safety of themselves and the safety of those that they are working with (including office colleagues, event staff and audiences). Risk Assess and adhere to defined SHE protocols when undertaking work.
**Person Specification**:
- Each criteria will be assessed shortlisting (S), at Interview (I) or both (S&I)_
- Ability to understand, synthesise and communicate complex scientific concepts and differentiate this for children and young people of different ages, family groups and adults (S&I)
- Knowledge of computing, physics and / or engineering to a post-16 level of qualification (S&I)
- Event planning and delivery experience, including supervision of small teams (S&I)
- A degree or the ability to organise and process data and information, to inform the writing of reports and proposals (S&I)
- Experience of and competence with the use of standard office software, particularly Microsoft Excel (S&I)
- Self-starter with ability to collaborate effectively with others to manage priorities for events, small projects and programmes (S&I)
