The post holder must ensure the blood samples are suitable for analytical, therapeutic or diagnostic testing and purpose. Adhering to all Trust Protocols, Policies, Procedures and relevant Health and safety legislation at all times.

The post holder will participate in providing a service 7 days a week including bank holidays

The post holder is responsible for the day-to-day supervision of all Phlebotomy functions and assisting the Operation’s Manager & Clinical Governance and Quality Lead (Pathology, Human Tissue) in clinical auditing, develop and implement policies, procedures and programs that will ensure compliance with existing regulations and best practices. To be responsible for planning, supervising and scheduling of Phlebotomy staff and data entry to ensure a robust, reliable & efficient service to internal service users. To lead the phlebotomy team and ensure a clean, comfortable and safe environment for patients using the service.

The post holder is responsible for ensuring all phlebotomy staff trainings are completed, up to date and documented.

The post holder is also responsible to act as an assistant and provide support to the Operation’s Manager & Clinical Governance and Quality Lead (Pathology, Human Tissue) in all aspects of service provision within Phlebotomy.
- To be fully competent in all aspects of venepuncture as according to the Trust Venepuncture Policy and practice different approaches to the technique maintaining competency levels through annual reassessment protocols.
- Participating in the monitoring of change & implement any improvement to develop service needs.

- Support the line manager in the investigation of any incidents and complaints.
- Provide support & advice for the development of individuals & teams
- Collect blood samples from patients who may be difficult to bleed, have fear of needles, or learning difficulties.
- Ensure specimens are taken safely and correctly stored prior to collection.
- Ensure specimens are safely and correctly labelled and packaged for transport to laboratory.
- Liaise with the medical and nursing staff as necessary regarding the blood samples required.
- Maintain cleanliness and hygiene of work areas, trolleys and equipment. Report any defects or repairs required.
- Report any accidents and incidents in line with Trust’s policy and procedures.
- Be willing to attend phlebotomy departmental meetings and take part actively in the development of the service.

Clinical Governance

All staff must comply with the Trust Infection Control Policy. All employees must attend infection control training as required within their department as directed by their line manager.

Confidentiality

During the course of these duties, the post holder will have access to confidential material about patients, staff and other health service business. On no account must information relating to identifiable patients or staff members be divulged to anyone other than authorised persons, i.e. nurses, medical or other professional staff or as directed by an appropriate manager. Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in disciplinary action being taken against the post holder.

Human Resource Management

The post holder will provide first line support to the junior phlebotomists and participate in their training, education and appraisal including the setting of objectives based on service needs.

Education and Training

The post holder will be expected to undertake training and development as directed and take reasonable steps to maintain up to date professional knowledge for proper performance of role, including maintaining portfolio of continuous professional development as required.

The post holder is required to positively participate in an appraisal system.

Equipment
- Ensure all equipment has been regularly maintained.
- Ensure all equipment is used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Ensure any equipment found to be faulty/unsafe should be removed from use and reported to the appropriate authority.

Competency Based Appraisal

The post holder will be appraised on an annual basis and the process will include a review of the past year’s performance, setting of aims and objectives for the coming y
