**Head of Education and Research at Dartmoor Zoo**

**Role Description**

**In a Nutshell**

You will oversee two very critical areas for the Charity (Dartmoor Zoological Society): the Education Team who educate and enthuse our visitors and students; and our researchers within The Dartmoor Institute of Animal Science.
As part of our senior leadership team, you will play a vital role in managing all aspects of these areas, ranging from daily operational aspects, including teaching, through to strategic development.

**These are your main Tasks**

**Leadership**
- Continually develop and deliver the educational and research strategies for the Zoo.
- Contribute towards the overall planning and development process for the whole Zoo.
- Participate in organisational development planning designed to further the Charity’s mission.
- Be responsible for the control of departmental expenditure within an agreed budget.

Prepare estimates for budgets for the department annually in conjunction with the Head of
Finance.
- Assume responsibility for staff management for the whole of education and research, including recruitment, resourcing, performance management and development.
- Ensure staff are aware of, and comply with, Health and Safety regulations.
- Provide tutoring and mentoring services to staff undergoing training.
- Be responsible for and oversee the management of volunteers when working in support of connected activities.
- Manage the delivery of informative messaging on-site through motivational training for staff and volunteers, education and public engagement.

**Education**
- Ensure the smooth day to day running of the Education team.
- Develop and manage informal and formal learning initiatives within the Zoo.
- Explore and develop educational opportunities locally, regionally and nationally that expand the Zoo’s mission. This includes responsibility for increasing the revenue of the Education
Team.
- Liaise with schools, colleges, universities and other educational establishments along with relevant government departments.
- Oversee the educational bookings, resourcing and invoicing.
- Contribute towards exhibit development particularly in respect of learning strategies and interpretation.
- Be responsible for the outward appearance of the site and the way the Charity presents itself to the public including compliant and engaging signage, talks, and visuals.
- Be responsible for the educational interpretation, labelling and signage around the zoo.
- Devise educational events onsite and take part in strategic offsite events in order to raise the profile of the Zoo and increase school and public visitor numbers. This includes the formulation of marketing together with the marketing team in order to get maximum engagement.
- Comply with legislation affecting the teaching of school groups.
- Give talks, education sessions and attend zoo meetings, some of which may be outside the normal working day.

**Research**
- Liaise with universities and educational establishments and connect with approved in-situ conservation projects to assist their development and further the educational, environmental and conservation objectives of the organisation.
- With the Research Officer effectively manage academic placements on-site, ensuring that students are fulfilled in their work and that activities are supportive and in line with the
Zoo’s organisational mission and objectives.
- Research opportunities and work to secure grant funding to assist in the planned strategic growth of conservation research.
- Liaise in the development and management of events, functions and activities targeted to enhance and support our mission.
- Monitor and advise on environmental and welfare aspects of Zoo operation, ensuring that activities meet with best practice, support the ethos of the organisation, and are managed with respect for the environment and the eco-system.
- Maintain accurate departmental records as required, completing routine operations to meet with agreed deadlines also complying with regulations and statutory obligations as appropriate.

**General**
- Cooperate with the Chief Operating Officer and trustees undertaking direction and tasks commensurate with the responsibilities of the role, and any other tasks as reasonably requested.
- You will be expected to get involved in the practical aspects of managing the education and research facilities and where necessary assist with visitor liaison, teaching and signage creation duties.
- Ensure good communication with other Departments in order to create guest experiences and great learning opportunities.
- Deputise for colleagues when they are absent and represent the Zoo as the occasion demands to promote its objectives.
- With training become a Duty Manager for the overall zoo and be the point of contact for daily zoo wide operations.
- Drive zoo vehicles as required (licence required)
