The Data Protection and Freedom of Information team sits within UCL’s Office of General Counsel and is responsible for providing advice on a wide range of data protection and freedom of information matters relating to the University.

The Data Protection and Freedom of Information Team is headed by Alexandra Potts, the Data Protection and Freedom of Information Officer. Alexandra reports to the General Counsel, Natasha Lewis, who reports to the Provost, Dr Michael Spence.

**About the role**:
The Senior Data Protection and Freedom of Information Adviser is a business and technology focused job. You'll use your experience and ability to play a key role in the transformation required by an evolving institution against a background of increasing regulatory focus, transparency, competition, globalisation and a rapidly evolving threat horizon, especially in the information security space.

In this job you will be central to managing UCL's day to day compliance with the UK GDPR, the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA), and the Environmental Information Regulations (EIRs). You will provide advice on all matters relating to data protection and freedom of information compliance to staff at all levels and will assist in providing training and guidance across UCL.

Working within a team of data protection and freedom of information professionals, you'll be responsible for supporting and helping to advise the University’s Faculties, Schools, Institutes and Professional Service (PS) functions by providing expert, pragmatic, and targeted data protection and freedom of information support, guidance and training, across the University, in accordance with the relevant legislation, University, policies, standard operating procedures and technical security standards.

The post is available from late July 2023 as maternity cover and is available until July 2024/the return of the substantive post holder, whichever is sooner.

**Please note**: This role does not meet the eligibility requirements for a Skilled Worker Visa certificate of sponsorship under UK Visas and Immigration legislation. Therefore UCL will not be able to sponsor individuals who require right to work in the UK to carry out this role.

**About you**:
For this role you will need a proven track record of successfully managing a large number of requests and enquiries under the FOIA, DPA, EIRs in a similar role, individually and as part of a team. Excellent organisational skills: ability to manage competing demands and time-critical schedules to meet deadlines are essential.

You will also need experience of building relationships and successfully collaborating with internal stakeholders.

You will need to demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills, with an ability to prepare reports, specifications and plans and present these to variable audiences.

You will be expected to carry out your duties with tact and diplomacy and an understanding of and respect for the principles of confidentiality.
