Main duties of the job

The role of the Associate Practitioner is to undertake a range of respiratory physiology investigations, consistent with their grade whilst undertaking the Healthcare Science Apprenticeship programme. You will be an active member of the Respiratory Physiology team undertaking a range of diagnostic procedures to meet the needs of the patient in a safe, caring environment that promotes dignity, privacy and respect under indirect supervision.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You will be expected to complete the BSc (Hons) Degree Apprenticeship in Respiratory and Sleep Physiology Level 6 over a 3 year timeframe. During your apprenticeship, your specialist knowledge will be developed in areas including anatomy and physiology and clinical investigations, providing you with the ability to understand and form links between presentation, diagnosis and treatment of disease. You will be required to have the following qualifications to be eligible to undertake the apprenticeship:
Plus one of the following:
96 UCAS points from three A levels (including 32 points in biology). The study of chemistry is useful, but not essential. We do not accept general studies.

Access to HE Diploma from a relevant QAA-recognised Access to HE course which has mainly biology and chemistry related modules, or an equivalent Access to HE certificate. Normally we require 15 credits at level 2 and 45 at level 3 of which at least 15 level 3 credits should be graded at distinction level.
- 112 UCAS points from at least two A levels (including at least 32 points in biology) or equivalent BTEC National qualifications (including suitable chemistry and biology modules.) The study of chemistry is useful, but not essential. We accept AS Levels. We do not accept general studies.You will also be expected to undertake the ARTP Practitioner qualification. There will then be the opportunity to progress to a Band 5 Clinical Respiratory Physiologist upon successful completion of both the BSc programme and completion of the ARTP Practitioner qualification.

We are co-located on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus with Royal Papworth Hospital and there will be an expectation of some cross site working between the two services, with potential for supporting the Heart and Lung Research Institute.

Once established within the role there will be an expectation for you to be involved in respiratory research, both commercial and non-commercial, which is continually undertaken within the department. We are currently a clinical excellence site for a number of commercial research trials.
