**About the role**

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Mechanical Designer to join the Mechanical Engineering Group at the Department of Space and Climate Physics (Mullard Space Science Laboratory), University College London (UCL). The job will involve workingon a joint mission with the Japanese space agency on its flagship solar physics mission Solar-C. The laboratory has a long history working with the Japanese space agency JAXA.
The post holder will work within project teams to develop and analyse instruments or subsystems of instruments as required for the laboratory's space projects. The work carried out will support either instrument development during the study phase of space programmes,fulfil instrument design requirements during the build phase or support mechanical test programmes.
Initially the focus will be on developing design solutions for the focal plane assembly, including CCDs as well as the shutter mechanism support and baffle tube. The job involves many different design aspects, including mechanical and thermal (straps and radiators)as well as electrical, connector mounting, and assembly jigs for soldering.

**About you**

The post holder should have the ability to come up with design concepts and evolve them by creating and maintaining CAD models and files along with being able to create and interpret engineering drawings.
Experience in creating and maintaining CAD models and files, mechanical design experience and a proven track record of manufactured designs are also essential requirements for this post.
