**Senior Clinical Research Fellow in UGI Surgery**

This role will allow the development of research skills and production of data which the postholder should use to develop a research thesis leading to an MD or PhD degree. The data may also be used to compete for external funding. Although research will form the major component of this post, participation in associated clinical duties in NHS Lanarkshire in Upper Gastro-intestinal Surgery (one session of 4 hours per week with full-time participation in the junior registrar on-call rota) and a small amount of teaching will be incorporated into the role. Postholders will be expected to register and undertake a higher degree [MD/PhD].

The clinical post will be based at University Hospital Wishaw which will consist of 1 clinical session per week (4 hours) and a full commitment to the on-call rota. The remaining time will be undertaking research with the University of Glasgow.

UHW is the Surgical Trauma Unit for NHS Lanarkshire and collocates with Trauma and Orthopaedics on the site with 4 dedicated emergency theatres.

UHW is the Regional Centre for Specialist Upper Gastrointestinal Surgical Services including oesophago-gastric cancer resections, bariatric surgery and complex hiatal/biliary surgery. The Upper GI Team actively manage the endoscopic palliation of advanced Upper GI malignancy through an outpatient fast track pathway. Both Upper GI and colorectal services are supported by an excellent endoscopy department

UHW also has a large colorectal unit carrying out laparoscopic malignant and benign resections. Benign Interests include Sacral Nerve stimulation, complex inflammatory Bowel Disease, laparoscopic ventral rectopexy and ESD.

The School of Cancer Sciences at the University of Glasgow performs world-class research focused on understanding the molecular and microenvironmental changes that cause cancer. The School consists of 51 research groups who aim to translate scientific discoveries into new drugs or diagnostic and prognostic tools that benefit cancer patients, taking new therapies through preclinical and clinical trials. The facilities house a number of state-of-the-art technologies that underpin our key research themes, including _in vitro_ and _in vivo_ imaging, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics, transgenic production, mouse model development and maintenance. The School represents a major component of the Cancer Research UK Scotland Centre.

Applicants should hold full GMC registration with a license to practice.

Although the post is not officially recognised by NES for training, the successful applicant will have the same opportunities in the busy unit as other trainees. The post is a full shift rota with commitments to daytime and out of hours on call.
