Hospital Play Specialist

To work as a member of the multi-disciplinary team, ensuring every child has the opportunity, encouragement and facilities for play in a safe, secure child orientated environment.
To provide therapeutic play appropriate to the childs’ age, medical condition and background, and to utilise play as a tool to prepare the child, and their family, for theatre under anaesthesia and post-operatively with coping strategies.
Principle Duties
Alongside the Day Surgery Unit the post-holder will organise, initiate and supervise play facilities for children 0-18 appropriate for their age, cognitive ability and background.
To provide emotional support and continuity of care pre and post-operatively for the children, young people and family within the Day Surgery Unit.
To participate in providing an environment in which children can have a basic understanding of their operation and have the confidence to cope with their hospital visit or admission.
To maintain a child focused environment, where play occurs naturally and promotes the value of play within the hospital setting.
To coordinate and supervise preoperative visits to the unit.
To teach and advise other professional personnel about the effect of hospitalisation on children and the value of play.
To be responsible for maintaining stock, advising on resources to meet the needs of the service area, and managing the toy budget at ward level.
