**Job summary**:
Transport is important to everyone, and it’s important that we harness the latest in technological developments to enable us to achieve our goals. From the global shipping and aviation routes that deliver our food, fuel and medicine and link us physically to the rest of the world, to the roads and railways that are the arteries of our country, the role of the Department for Transport is to ensure that we can all access safe, secure and reliable services and infrastructure across the UK.

Digital twins will enable us to optimise and integrate the transport technologies and networks of the future more effectively. To help us do this, we have a brilliant opportunity for **you** to join the Department for Transport as our Head of Digital Twins

**Job description**:
Digital Twins are part of the vision for embedding the latest advances in technology to improve transport networks for everyone and we need to drive and shape their use in achieving our strategic aims.

As part of the Advanced Analytics Division, the department’s core capability for delivering Data Science, AI and machine learning, as well as our experts in building and developing models, you’ll be part of a growing and ambitious team.

You will be both inward and outward facing in this role - working with world class experts in their fields in academia and industry, ensuring your knowledge and expertise remain at the leading edge of Digital Twin developments while researching some of the highest impact technological advances to help shape the future of Digital Twins in transport. You will be part of an organisation that continuously looks to innovate and generate creative new ideas to help improve lives and keep Britain moving.

We take learning and development seriously: giving you set time to learn. We give our people the freedom to think and we offer loads of opportunities to keep up-to-date with the latest developments through training opportunities, attending and presenting at conferences, and publishing papers to ensure you stay linked into those vital wider academic networks. We also pay for professional memberships and support staff to gain Chartered and Fellowship status.

**Responsibilities**

As the Department for Transport’s Lead for Digital Twins you’ll be coordinating the many strands of work in this area from championing a Digital Twin vision for Transport, through shaping large programmes of research. You’ll be working across government departments and with international partners, ensuring both DfT funded and external R&D is directed to the needs of the UKs transport network.

You will be working with policy colleagues to ensure their priorities are supported. Key to the role is your ability to translate the complex and detailed technology of Digital Twins to policy professionals who may not have a strong technical background, ensuring the fundamental technological understanding of risks and opportunities are embedded into the work of the department.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

- Lead on the development and delivery of the DfT’s programme for Digital Twins.
- Champion, shape and support delivery of the Federated network of Digital Twins vision and roadmap (currently being developed by the Connected Places Catapult).
- Represent the Department in cross Whitehall programmes of work and research activities in Digital Twins.
- Be the Departmental deep technical expert and lead on briefings at all levels covering Digital Twins.
- Lead the engagement and communication with policy professionals across the department, translating complex technical messages for non-technical audiences.

Please refer to the role profile attached for more information.

You will have the option to be either based in London attracting the London pay scale, or in Leeds, Birmingham or Hastings attracting the national pay scale.

**Person specification**:
**About You**

It is essential that you are passionate and knowledgeable about Digital Twinning technologies.

You will also need relevant experience in the areas of:

- Leading on programmes
- Stakeholder engagement, effective influence and communication

We are looking for a dynamic self-starter who embraces challenges, who will thrive in a working environment centred around tech and will want to push boundaries.
