The Hamlyn Centre was established for developing safe, effective and accessible technologies that can reshape the future of healthcare for both developing and developed countries. Focusing on technological innovation, but with a strong emphasis on clinical translation and direct patient benefits with global impacts, the Centre is at the forefront of research in imaging, sensing and robotics for addressing global health challenges associated with demographic, environmental, social and economic changes.

This newly created post will stimulate the development of new programmes, generate new grant income and design new courses; bringing together expertise from across the Faculty of Engineering whilst also increasing integration with staff from the Faculty of Medicine. The expansion of this area will generate unique solutions through the combination of clinical and engineering disciplines, a key principle on which the centre was founded.

This will be driven by new research in materials, manufacturing processes (e.g. leveraging the thermal fibre drawing, and multi-scale material printing facilities at the Hamlyn Centre) and sensing schemes that will support the deployment of next generation diagnostic and therapeutic technologies. The latter will include:

- sensing technologies to be deployed inside the patient’s body;
- wearable sensors for clinicians and intent recognition algorithms;
- virtual reality for clinical training and for surgery planning;
- wearable sensors for rehabilitation (e.g. stroke) or diagnosis (e.g. Parkinson’s disease).

The postholder will also contribute to the expansion of the Hamlyn Centre’s teaching curriculum in materials science, design for manufacture, machine learning and signal processing.

**Duties and responsibilities**:
As a member of Academic Staff, you will be required to:

- Develop a research portfolio in sensing and manufacturing that will bridge the gap between engineering and healthcare technologies, and deploy the next generation of diagnostic and therapeutic technologies.
- Contribute towards developing the curriculum of teaching programmes in materials, manufacturing, sensing and signal processing.
- Represent the Hamlyn Centre at symposiums, conferences and forums, bolstering the Centre’s reputation and taking an active role in the strategic planning of the Centre.
- Participate in Centre and/or Department administrative roles, attending relevant operational and strategic committees and working groups as required.

**Essential requirements**:
You should have a track record in Hardware and Software Engineering.

It is crucial that you have a national (and international, for Senior Lecturer) reputation in one or more of the following areas:

- Biomedical Material Modelling
- Tissue Characterization
- In Situ Diagnostics
- Machine Learning
- Signal Processing
- Wearable Sensors
- Virtual Reality for Surgery
- Affordable Technologies for Health
