The Department of Psychology is seeking a full-time Research Trainee to work with Dr Silke Göbel and Dr Tom Hartley for 18 months on an ESRC-funded Open Research Area project. The project will be run in collaboration with Dr Andre Knops at the Université de Paris, France, and Prof Martin Fischer at the University of Potsdam, Germany. The aim of the overall project is to investigate the Boundary Conditions of Conceptual Spaces (BounCeS).

The overarching project looks at the structure of conceptual knowledge using a variety of methods to compare “spatial” and “non-spatial” explanations. The UK-arm of the project is focused on the development of numerical cognition in children. Specifically, we will investigate the way that signature effects of the numerical magnitude representation (distance and size effects) emerge during the acquisition of numerical symbols in children and explore the impact of developmental dependencies on the shape of conceptual knowledge using newly acquired transitive series. Studies will consist of a series of cross-sectional behavioural, eye
- and motion-tracking experiments with children aged 4 to 12 years.

**Role**:
The main purpose of the role is to provide support to the UK-based part of the research project and assist with its day-to-day operation. The post holder will have an undergraduate degree in psychology or a related discipline and experience working with children. The project will involve running experiments with children in the lab and in schools, as well as liaising with parents and teachers to build contacts in the community. The post will also involve organising events and promoting public engagement with science.

**Skills, Experience & Qualification needed**:

- To conduct testing into numerical cognition with children aged 4-12 years
- To liaise with parents, teachers and other external contacts in order to build links with the community
- To code data and document the experiments appropriately and in accordance with best research practice and ethical requirements
- To assist with the creation of experimental materials (such as computerised tasks, design of testing booklets, scripts for testing, and score sheets)
- To consider the impact of the project and engage with the public with the support of senior colleagues (website creation, newsletter writing, social media)
- To provide regular reports on the progress of the projects to senior colleagues
- To undertake appropriate organisational and administrative activities. Examples may include organising meetings, conferences and workshops, monitoring budgets and developing promotional or educational material.
- To prioritise tasks within an agreed work schedule to ensure that the project(s) are delivered on time.
