Manchester, United Kingdom Contact Theatre Full time

Our vision is a world where young people are empowered by creativity and the arts._

**AN INTRODUCTION FROM OUR CHAIR**

Thank you for your interest in a Trustee position with Contact. This is an exciting time for us as we continue to navigate our paths to helping young people change their lives through the arts.

We are the leading UK arts venue with a mission to place young people at the decision-making heart of everything, changing the face of UK arts and culture for the last 50 years. At Contact, young people aged 13-30 lead, working with staff to decide the artistic programme, making staff appointments and act as full Board members. The result is an outstanding, diverse and accessible artistic programme for everyone.

In 2021 Contact reopened after a major expansion of its building, creating a vibrant, sustainably-designed creative hub for the 21st Century. The new building is a cultural ecosystem under one roof, featuring 3 public performance stages, an arts and health studio, rehearsal spaces, a media and recording studio, and hireable offices for other creative businesses. Public spaces have doubled in size, and a new cafe and bar supports a range of community and commercial activity.

Board and staff members are expected to work within Contact’s core values:
**Our Values**
- We take a young-person centred approach to decision-making
- We promote inclusion, access, understanding between communities, and a commitment to anti-racism
- We foster artistic excellence, integrity and creative risk-taking
- We nurture new artists, creative leaders and audiences
- We care for our health, each other and our community
- We care for our planet and environment, working towards a carbon neutral future

There are several opportunities available for individuals who want to not only grow but to share their commercial and lived experiences with the board and the wider team. You may already possess the skills required at board level, or you may be completely new to it.

**OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE**

The Board of Trustees has overall control of Contact and, as a member of that Board you will be responsible for making sure that we achieve our aims and ambitions in an effective and accountable way.

The Trustees delegate the day-to-day management decisions to the Interim Executive Director (Jack Dale-Dowd) and his team of staff. It is a requirement of their roles to keep the Trustees informed through a series of reports and presentations. These can be presented directly to Trustees or through Board Sub Committees where Trustees interrogate the information before passing it through to the Board Meetings for information or decision.

You will also become a key part of the development of the young artists working with Contact through presentations they make to the Board or by coming along to their performances.

The Board is currently made up of 8 Trustees including representatives from GMCA and the University of Manchester. From 2020 at least 50% of Trustees are young people under the age of 30 in line with our core objective to ensure that young people are at the heart of our decision making. All our Trustees are passionate about the work that we do and provide a strong supportive network for each other and staff.

It will be your responsibility to ensure that:

- The organisation complies with its governing document, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations
- Contact carries out its objectives as defined in its governing document
- The staff team, led by the Interim Executive Director, applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objectives and that Contact does not spend money on activities which are not included in its own objectives, no matter how worthwhile or charitable those activities are
- The Board of Trustees give firm strategic direction to the organisation, setting overall policy, defining goals and setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets
- The good name and values of Contact are safeguarded
- The administration of the organisation is effective and efficient
- Contact is financially stable
- Support is given to fundraising initiatives taken directly by Board members or coordinated by the Contact team through the Development Manager
- The property of the charity is well managed and protected and that the charity's funds are properly invested

**Trustees are expected to have**:

- Enthusiasm for the work of Contact and to be an advocate for Contact in the wider community.
- Commitment to carry out the general responsibilities of a Trustee as outlined above.
- The time to prepare thoroughly for meetings, regularly attend and participate at Board meetings and other Board events (minimum attendance standard at meetings/events - 50%) and to contribute to the work of Contact through membership of a sub-committee or working party as agreed with the Chair.
- A good working knowledge of the range of Contact’s activities and regular attendance at perfo
