About the role & Brave Spaces

Brave Spaces is a collaboration between Mind in Somerset, Encompass, NDADA & CoLab working together to support women with multiple disadvantages including domestic violence, homelessness, substance misuse and mental health. The work of braves spaces is built on relationships and the importance of relationships within women’s recovery. The role of mental health support worker is to support women both in our accommodation and via our outreach service to understand the impacts of their mental health on their recovery, to help them access the right support and to offer interventions which will support them to live a happy life.

The post holder will
- Carry a caseload of between 8-10 women
- Work as part of a team with the housing and IDVA support workers
- Be trauma informed in their approach
- Have a good knowledge of the mental health system across Devon.
- Provide mental health advice to their peers

Brave Spaces Objectives

1) A safe accommodation offer.

The project teams in both areas will:

- Provide a single point of access and holistic wrap around support offer to women who find themselves homeless due to DSVA and to co-design and develop a trauma-resilience hub model with partners.
- Provide safe accommodation offer to women which includes:

- Wrap around holistic support (including mental health support)
- Specialist IDVA support
- Out of hours support (SPARK worker)
- Provide Specialist psychologist support to women accessing support as part of their recovery in both areas.

2) Pioneer Projects: There will be 3 focus projects (a-c)in the first year and two cross cutting and longer term projects (d-e) which will improve life chances and outcomes for women.

a. Brave spaces for women apart from Children

b. Brave spaces for young women (18-25)

c. Brave spaces for learning and change

d. Improving equality of access to support (focus on protected characteristics)

e. A women’s centre in both areas.

3) An action learning community and stewardship group, the braves spaces Lead/s will work with the core team to establish the evaluation/learning group (Action Learning Community) and the stewardship group, who will work in partnership with the operational team to achieve impact.

Establish an action-learning community to gather evidence of learning to inform service and practice development. Also a stewardship group to respond to data and insights from learning collected, make recommendations and support system change.

Provide specialist training to generalist workers (substance misuse, mental health, trauma informed practice etc) and support gender informed practice in the wider system.

Develop a variety of toolbox training resources which can be shared across Devon which are based on need and co-designed by women accessing the services.

Key Duties:

- To ensure that you provide accurate advice and support to women around the issues of their mental health.
- To provide person centred casework to women accessing the Brave Spaces project and develop a treatment plan or where a treatment plan in already in place support the women to achieve their goals.
- To attend appointments with women where necessary.
- To provide advocacy on your clients behalf.
- Work closely with referral agencies to carry out safety planning for women accessing Brave Spaces
- Attend bi-weekly Brave Spaces meetings with the team.
- To collect feedback from women to allow us to record the effectiveness of our work.
- To ensure that all necessary paperwork, data inputting etc. is completed in a timely and professional manner.
- To subscribe to working within a Trauma Informed remit; to contribute to a Trauma Informed and Responsive service.
- To support your peers with any mental health advice they may need.
- To share with the team updates on mental health changes locally which could impact the women we support.
- To support our pathfinder project (Trauma stabilisation)

- To help create and promote an ethos whereby women are empowered to make positive choices and plans for a healthier future.
- To develop a relationship of trust with women to enable them to develop a sense of identity and help them gain confidence to achieve their goals.
