Nottingham, United Kingdom Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust Full time

**Job overview**:
**This post is pending Royal College Approval**

This is an exciting time to join the department as we consolidate and formalise our support to non-cancer conditions, re-launch day therapy unit, support CAR-T cell therapy, work closely with community partners and deliver the new palliative medicine curriculum for undergraduate medical students at University of Nottingham.

**Main duties of the job**:
Clinical work will include covering 7-8 inpatient beds at Hayward House and contributing to the Hospital Palliative Care Team service across NUH (The Hospital Palliative Care Team consists of 10.25 WTE specialist nurses and carried out 2559 new and follow up patient reviews that was 6163 face to face contacts in total in 2019-2020). There is time between the morning and afternoon PAs for the consultant to take lunch.

There is an on-call commitment 1 in 7 weeknights and 1 in 7 weekends. The on call work is annualised to 0.75 PA and is classed as low intensity category B. In the week following a weekend on call there will be the flexibility for a later start or an earlier finish on one day to compensate the time worked at the weekend.
- More information including an indicative timetable for the post is featured in the job description

As well as offering a varied and stimulating workload, this role can also cater to individual interests such as teaching, educational supervision, research and leadership roles within the specialty.

**Working for our organisation**:
Specialist palliative care services at NUH consist of a 20 bedded inpatient unit based at Hayward House, a day therapy unit, an outpatients department, the Hospital Palliative Care Team for NUH which covers both City and Queens Medical Centre Campuses, a complementary therapy centre, a counselling and bereavement service and research and education departments. Patients and those important to them are cared for by an experienced multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, allied healthcare professionals, counsellors, chaplains and administration staff. A Consultant anaesthetist has a session to provide pain interventions for patients.

There are two community based palliative care nursing teams who have close links with Hayward House. We provide specialist palliative care to patients with advanced progressive disease based on need rather than specific diagnosis. The consultant will be supported by a complement of junior doctors comprising 3 Specialist trainees in Palliative Medicine, 2 Internal Medicine trainees and 2 GP trainees who provide 1:7 first on call. We also have GP trainees who opt to do their ITP placement in Hayward House.

**Detailed job description and main responsibilities**:

Each consultant is expected to take an active role in clinical governance activities including (but not restricted to) clinical audit, incident reporting, review of complaints, risk management, CPD and Evidence-Based Practice.
