**Job summary**:
This is a challenging and high-profile post at the centre of the department’s Finance Group, which includes not only the finance function, but commercial, security and data protection, risk management, business planning, business strategy, and contact management and partner delivery.

The FDG’s Private Office is a small, closely-knit and highly efficient unit, and the post plays a key role delivering the environment to enable the FDG to focus on her top priorities and discharge her responsibilities efficiently and effectively.

The post holder will be responsible for the ownership of a broad portfolio of the FDG’s responsibilities.

It is imperative the post holder is independent and proactive, adept at acting on their own initiative whilst making a meaningful contribution to the work of the wider team.

**Job description**:
As the Assistant Private Secretary for the Finance Director General, you will:

- Lead a broad portfolio across Finance Group for the Director General, including on key priorities (to be agreed upon appointment), proactively identifying any emerging issues and potential solutions.
- Lead effective briefing for the Director General, to ensure she is prepared and able to effectively execute her role.
- Commission, review, quality assure both strategic and technical advice to the Director General, on key responsibilities - from the Annual Report and Accounts to key parliamentary demands including Select Committees and Public Accounts Committees.
- Provide support to the Finance Executive Team, leading on weekly executive team meetings, including setting agendas and negotiating content, commissioning and liaising with presenters, and tracking and monitoring actions.
- Build effective relationships across the Department including with senior officials within Finance Group and more broadly across DWP, and with Secretary of State, Ministerial and Permanent Secretary private offices.
- Deputise for the Director General’s Private Secretary as required.
- Lead on other tasks befitting of this role as and when required.

**NOTE - **There will be some requirement to travel with overnight stays, particularly to London if not London based.

**Person specification**:
Essential Criteria:

- Excellent organisational and prioritisation skills, being able to work effectively across a range of tasks and under pressure, managing your time efficiently.
- Strong ability to upwardly manage to ensure the Director General can effectively execute their role - including by seeking support on a timely and appropriate basis.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to manage and effectively engage stakeholders and senior officials from across DWP and their offices.
- Excellent team player, being able to work flexibly and collaboratively across tasks to support the Director General

Desirable Criteria:
Understanding/interest in DWP, its strategy and priorities.

Previous private office experience.
