The Hamlyn Centre was established for developing safe, effective and accessible technologies that can reshape the future of healthcare for both developing and developed countries. Focusing on technological innovation, but with a strong emphasis on clinical translation and direct patient benefits with global impacts, the Centre is at the forefront of research in imaging, sensing and robotics for addressing global health challenges associated with demographic, environmental, social and economic changes.

This newly created post will stimulate the development of new programmes, generate new grant income and design new courses; bringing together expertise from across the Faculty of Engineering whilst also increasing integration with staff from the Faculty of Medicine. The expansion of this area will generate unique solutions through the combination of clinical and engineering fields, a key principle on which the centre was founded.

We are looking to hire a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in this brand-new position within the Hamlyn Centre to investigate micro
- and nano-scale systems for robotics and sensing. An up-and-coming but broad field, this area has huge potential to provide exciting innovations in healthcare. This post will ensure that the Centre is able to bolster our research programmes in this emerging field and solidifying our position at the forefront to continued innovation towards further healthcare impact. There is already work being undertaken in this area within the Centre, using our ground-breaking facilities and research environment bringing clinicians and engineers together means it is uniquely placed to impact this field and remains world-leading at present.

The postholder will compliment philanthropic discussions with international industrial partners and institutes, continuing collaborations and support for research into micro/nanorobotics for the brain. Through the programme of research proposed to TCCI, we will investigate three key areas:

- Fibre-based microrobotic tools for brain study and stimulation;
- Micro/nanorobots for drug delivery across the blood-brain barrier; and
- In situ bioprinting for enhanced neurosurgery.

Our long-term dedication to expand the Centre will lead to further research programmes in the field of micro/nanoscale robotics and sensing for healthcare, driving significant impact in the sector.

**Duties and responsibilities**:
As a member of Academic Staff, you will be required to:

- Develop a research portfolio in micro and/or nano robotics, working with colleagues within the Faculties of Engineering and Medicine at Imperial College London, philanthropic partners and industrial collaborators.
- Contribute towards teaching Mechatronics in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and support the curriculum development of the Hamlyn Centres own Robotics programmes.
- Represent the Hamlyn Centre at symposiums, conferences and forums, bolstering the Centre’s reputation and taking an active role in the strategic planning of the Centre.
- Participate in Centre and/or Department administrative roles, attending relevant operational and strategic committees and working groups as required.

**Essential requirements**:
You should have a track record in Hardware and Software Engineering.

It is crucial that you have a national (and international, for Senior Lecturer) reputation in one or more of the following areas:

- microfabrication technologies (e.g. 2-photon polymerisation, thin layer deposition, MEMS/MOEMS, etc.);
- microfluidics for sensing and actuation;
- multimaterial fibres
- novel control architectures for micro/nanorobots (e.g. magnetic, ultrasonic, optical, etc.)
- novel micro/nanorobot actuation mechanisms (e.g. optical, thermal, compliant, pneumatic, etc.)
- development of multifunctional robotic/sensing systems at the microscale.

You must have an understanding of fluid dynamics, micro-engineering and microscale actuator design.
