Manchester, United Kingdom Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Bowel Cancer is the fourth most common cause of cancer in the UK. Bowel cancer is treatable and curable especially if diagnosed early. Bowel cancer screening can save lives and aims to detect bowel cancer at an early stage when treatment has the best chance of working.

Are you looking for a career opportunity in a rewarding skilled Specialist Screening Practitioner nursing role (SSP)?

In Manchester, the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme is expanding to include participants age 50 - 59 years and patients with Lynch Syndrome who require surveillance colonoscopy, so we are looking to recruit experienced nurses that we will support in developing into our forward-thinking Specialist Screening Nurse Practitioner team.

We are looking for someone who cares about the people we see, can work on their initiative, feels confident in their nursing assessment skills and thrives in a fast-paced environment.

It is highly recommended that potential applicants contact the Screening Centre to arrange a visit with the team.

Applicants who fail to supply a detailed supporting statement specifying how their skills and experience match the person specification contained in the job description will not be invited for interview. Previous applicants also need not apply.

SSPs are responsible for supporting patients throughout their screening pathway - from initial assessment clinics, working in the endoscopy room when the patient attends their procedure, and managing the interpretation, documentation, and giving of results then liaising with members of the MDT.

Our SSP's are highly skilled nurse practitioners who have the responsibility to ensure that all patients who are eligible for for bowel cancer screening, have a seamless journey through the bowel screening pathway.

This means that you need to be reliable and flexible as you will work between different Hospital/community sites to provide a service to Bowel Cancer Screening patients residing in South Manchester, Stockport, Tameside and Trafford; you must have access to a car and a full UK driving licence.

Education and support is key to your development as an effective SSP. A full induction programme is provided and in order for you to fulfil the role requirements you will complete the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme Specialist Screening Practitioner Course at Liverpool John Moore’s University within 2 years. Successful completion of this course is essential for you to remain in the SSP role. You will also attend training for the national computer database course for the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme. Additionally, given the difficult conversations SSP's have with patients and families, we support you to attend the 2-day Advanced Communication Course to further develop your skills.
