**Position: Senior Gardener**

**University of Oxford - University Parks Department**

**Location: Oxford, UK**

Reporting to the Parks management team, the Senior Gardener will lead teams, mentor apprentices, and carry out practical work activities.

**Responsibilities**:

- General grounds maintenance, including weed control, litter removal, and cultivation.
- Pruning of shrubs, climbers, and small trees.
- Care of planting, staking, training, and implementing plant protection measures.
- Border maintenance, covering shrubs, herbaceous plants, and seasonal bedding.
- Safe operation of various vehicles and machinery.
- Landscape operations, implementing designs and planting schemes.
- Leading teams on project work, routine tasks, and mentoring apprentices.
- Assisting Gardening Team leaders with day-to-day operations.
- Taking responsibility for assigned areas of work.

**Hazard-specific/Safety-critical duties**: This role involves safety-critical activities such as working at heights, lone working, and work in varying environments. Pre-employment health screening is mandatory.

**Selection Criteria**:
**Required**:

- Craft qualification in Horticulture (e.g., NVQ level 2, BTEC National Diploma, City & Guilds, NCH).
- PA1 and PA6 pesticide certification.
- Full, clean driving licence.
- Proven horticultural background.
- Good plant knowledge.
- Experience with a range of horticultural equipment.
- Flexible and adaptable approach to work.
- Interpersonal skills and the ability to lead teams.
- Ability to mentor apprentices and take responsibility for assigned areas.

**Desirable**:

- NPTC chainsaw certification.
- Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) licence.
- CSCS skills card for construction industry work.
- Plant operator’s certification (e.g., excavators, IPAF, dumpers).
