The post holder will be providing 10 consultant of the week cover per year to PICU and take part in 1 in 5.5 on call rota for PICU including evening and weekends.

In addition there is also time allocated to do medical students teaching and educational supervision.

The post holder will be fully trained in the organisational and practical skills required in Paediatric Intensive Care, including emergency airway access and intubation, use of ultrasound and the Seldinger technique for gaining secure vascular access, pleural drain insertion, renal support (CVVH), transport of the critically ill child, invasive and non-invasive respiratory support. It is essential that the post-holder works closely with the members of the PICU team, and the wider multidisciplinary teams within the Trust.

The Trust has recently appointed 2 advanced nurse practitioners in paediatric intensive care who will use their skills to provide a level of care that bridges the gap between middle grade and consultants. We plan to increase the number of advanced nurse practitioners as and when possible.

Secretarial support is provided by a secretary and support secretary based nearby to the consultants shared offices where PC and internet access is provided.
