PICU Consultant

Job summary

The post holder will be providing 10 consultant of the week cover per year to PICU and take part in 1 in on call rota for PICU including evening and weekends .

In addition to care delivery to PICU patients, the post holder will also have PAs allocated to support the HDU along with other PICU consultants by covering HDU Monday to Friday 9-5. This would equate to 81 HDU shifts per year ( please see the job plan). But these PAS can be used flexibly with the successful candidate should they prefer to and have the expertise to manage another area of their interest such as paediatric palliative care or Designated Doctor for Unexplained Deaths (DDUD).

In addition there is also time allocated to do medical students teaching and educational supervision.

There are plenty of opportunities to develop interest in research, education, governance and leadership roles for future candidates.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be fully trained in the organisational and practical skills required in Paediatric Intensive Care, including emergency airway access and intubation, use of ultrasound and the Seldinger technique for gaining secure vascular access, pleural drain insertion, renal support (CVVH), transport of the critically ill child, invasive and non-invasive respiratory support. It is essential that the post-holder works closely with the members of the PICU team, and the wider multidisciplinary teams within the Trust.

The Trust has recently appointed 2 advanced nurse practitioners in paediatric intensive care who will use their skills to provide a level of care that bridges the gap between middle grade and consultants. We plan to increase the number of advanced nurse practitioners as and when possible.

Secretarial support is provided by a secretary and support secretary based nearby to the consultants shared offices where PC and internet access is provided.

Qualifications

Essential

MB BS or equivalent MRCPCH / FRCA or equivalent higher qualification Must be in the specialist register (either via. CCT or CESR route) or within six months of obtaining CCT for UK trainees on the date of interview APLS or EPALS provider

Desirable

APLS or EPALS instructor Further Higher Degree, MD, PhD

Clinical Experience & Training

Essential

Completion of all competencies in Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine (minimum of two years) in a unit approved for training by the RCPCH National GRID OR equivalent training programme with evidence that this training has been accredited and recognised OR Existing Practising Consultant in Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine Level 3 Child Protection

Desirable

Experience in related sub-speciality Six months of anaesthetic training or equivalence Willingness to work in the Child Death Review team as a Designated Doctor for Unexplained Death Experience in palliative care and parallel planning

Academic Achievements, Research, Publications

Essential

Ability to teach clinical skills Commitment to continuing medical education Ability to collect and submit data for collaborative studies as required.
