The post hold will be required to meet the care needs of the paediatrics patients attending all Paediatrics’ orthopaedic clinics (including fracture) from a Casting Practitioner prospective.

The paediatric trauma service accepts patients primarily to the major trauma centre and surrounding minor injury units, tertiary referrals of complex trauma from surrounding units and transfers through the trauma network of severely injured children.

The Childrens Hospital run a variety of orthopaedic clinics through the week (including fracture clinic)

This includes - Removal of plasters, wound checks / dressings, and plaster placement.

Meeting the needs of the clinic and Childrens Hospital over 5 days is key to this post, covering the core clinic hours of between 9 am and 6pm, as well as providing support to Paediatric ward areas and assistance for the adult service at times of need.

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
- British Orthopaedic Association Casting course, including evidence of recertification every 3 years
- IT and numerically literate. Meets mandatory and essential role requirements
- Be adapt at the removal of a wide variety of plaster casts including hip spica’s in all ages of children

Desirable criteria
- Experience plastering children
- Fracture Clinic experience

Experience

Essential criteria
- 12 months experience working in a plaster room or working in an orthopaedic/Trauma setting
- Experience and knowledge of wound care management to include traumatic and post-operative wounds

Desirable criteria
- Plastering babies with Congenital Talipes Equino Varus using the Ponseti method and serial casting

Communication and relationship skills

Essential criteria
- Able to communicate with children of all ages
- Demonstrates the ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team
- Ability to communicate complex information in a busy environment

Desirable criteria
- Basic knowledge and understanding of common Orthopaedic conditions and injuries
- Entonox trained

Analytical and Judgement skills

Essential criteria
- Able to assess each patient and situation individually, seeking further advice and information as necessary

Planning and organisation skills

Essential criteria
- Able to work under own initiative and without direct supervision within responsibilities of the role
- Willing to manage stock levels of required plastering equipment

Desirable criteria
- Previous experience of managing stock levels
