The Chief Data Officer's (CDO) Directorate is responsible for the production of health intelligence and analysis, and we are transforming the way DHSC is using data right now. We are delivering key projects which will lead to significant changes in how data teams access and work with the data they need.

CDO teams also protect the business from the potential impacts of non-compliance with our policies, data protection, cyber security and other legal obligations, by helping them to identify, design out and manage risk.

**Job description**:
Under the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR), every public body who is a data controller or processes personal data must appoint a Data Protection Officer (DPO). The DHSC DPO is part of the Chief Data Officer's (CDO) Directorate and responsible for monitoring overall compliance with data protection laws and does this by:
This ensures that any use of personal data is lawful and that projects and information sharing initiatives are properly assessed for risks to individuals' rights.

Ensuring DHSC has a data protection policy, supporting standards and guidance in place to meet the needs of the department, wider government and citizens.

The role sits within the Chief Data Officer's (CDO) Directorate in the Office of the Data Protection team.

You will act as a Data Protection Specialist working in a small team who are responsible for delivering Data Protection services to the Department and relevant Arm’s Length Bodies. You will provide cover for both Head of Office and Data Protection Officer (DPO) including providing briefings to senior leadership in the department, and the Information Commissioner and may be asked to represent the Department at cross-government events.

You will be providing direct support to the DPO and Head of Office by:

- Undertaking the full range of statutory duties as outlined in the GDPR.
- Ensuring that all team members have the training and support to deliver their objectives.
- Making decisions around data protection within the Department, including reviewing and responding to Data Protection Impact Assessments.
- Drafting and delivering written briefs and submissions to senior leaders and Ministers about the data protection risk.
- Providing verbal updates to senior leaders on data protection issues.
- Developing advice and guidance to the Department and its ALBs.

**Person specification**:

- Leading on the creation and management of data protection related privacy policies, standards, procedures, documents and tools.
- Leading Departmental consultations on draft policies, standards and procedures.
- Monitoring changes to the UK GDPR and data protection legislation and updating DHSC data protection policies, standards, notices and guidelines accordingly.
- Acting as a first point of contact with citizens and DHSC employees around data protection issues.
- Providing notifications to Data Subjects of a potential (or actual) breach of personal data.
- Working with external and internal communications to define and develop privacy awareness campaigns, communications and updates.
- Providing expert advice and guidance to the business on data protection requirements and controls.
- Reviewing DPIAs, identifying remedial steps required, ensuring mitigations out of DPIA process are recorded and actioned and that significant data protection risks are recorded and managed.
