Buckinghamshire Inpatient Psychological Therapies Team - Sapphire Ward (Male, Acute)

We are looking for an enthusiastic Assistant Psychologist to work within our acute (male) Inpatient Ward for adults with complex and severe mental health difficulties. Postholders will support the psychological needs and deliver interventions to individual service users as well as within groups, working under the supervision of the Qualified Psychological Practitioner and members of the multidisciplinary team.

Sapphire Ward is a Male Acute Ward with 20 beds, operating 24 hours; Ruby Ward is a Female Acute Ward with 20 beds, operating 24 hours. Both acute wards serve Buckinghamshire counties. Opal Ward is a Mixed Adult Rehabilitation Ward with 20 beds, operating 24 hours serving Buckinghamshire counties.

Oxford Health has links to many research projects and the post holder will liaise closely with the associated Research Assistants to identify opportunities for relevant clients. Other work will require completion of clinically related administration, including letters, reports and maintaining electronic clinical records. The post-holder will also have an extended link with the Buckinghamshire Psychological Therapies pathway, also located in the Whiteleaf Centre and access to relevant CPD and training opportunities, including online CBT training.

To support and enhance the psychological care of adults admitted to Adult Acute (male) Inpatient Unit who are undergoing a mental health crisis or who require ongoing treatment. Supporting the psychological assessment and psychological interventions under the supervision of a qualified professional psychologist. Working independently according to a plan agreed with a qualified psychologist and within the overall framework of the team’s policies and procedures. There is a risk of exposure to verbal and physical aggression. Training in Breakaway Techniques is required.

The Inpatient Psychological Service sits within and across the 4 inpatient wards in Buckinghamshire. We have 4 wards: Ruby (female acute) and Sapphire (male acute), Opal (Rehabilitation) and Amber (older adult).

The post holder will be based full time on Sapphire Ward, with a highly skilled multi-disciplinary mental health staff team that include Nurses, Psychiatrists, Occupational Therapists, Health Care Assistants and Peer Support Workers.

The post holder will work closely with the Qualified Psychological Practitioner / Clinical or Counselling Psychologist / Consultant Clinical Psychologist in the Inpatient team and support them in achieving key objectives of delivering integrated, safe, accessible, responsive, effective and caring services to people in Buckinghamshire.

In turn, you will receive clinical supervision and will have access to a wide range of CPD activities and a strong network of Psychologists in Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. There are excellent opportunities for service development, service evaluation/research and teaching/training. The service has excellent links with the Oxford Institute of Clinical Psychology Training and Research and regularly has trainees doing clinical placements and research. The Psychological Therapies team are actively involved in research and innovation.

The post holder may be required to travel between Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire sites and occasionally elsewhere in the Region or nationally, (to attend professional meetings and training events). The transport of psychological test materials, audio-visual and IT equipment may occasionally be required.
