Shrewsbury, United Kingdom The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust Full time

A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen for an eager and dedicated Specialist Screening Practitioner (SSP) to join the Shropshire Bowel Cancer Screening Centre as part of a fixed term contract to cover maternity leave within the team.

The post-holder will be based at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, however will be required to work regularly at the service's other screening site, The Princess Royal Hospital in Telford. The service currently runs over 6 days, Monday to Saturday, however this may extend to 7-day working as the programme expands.

The successful applicant will join an established, friendly and professional team, providing high quality care to all screening participants.

The post holder will be required to work closely with the existing team to meet the requirements of the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.

You must be able to work effectively as part of a team, and as an autonomous practitioner managing your own caseload of patients. You will be undertaking nurse-led clinics including patient assessment and the provision of information and preparation and help of those undergoing endoscopic or radiological investigation. The role requires you to communicate and work closely with the wider multi-disciplinary team.

You must have excellent communication skills and be able to communicate delicate and complex information to both patients and colleagues, including breaking significant news. The post holder will help meet the Trust, Bowel Cancer Screening Programme and national targets.

You will be required to undertake training in the use of the Bowel Cancer Screening IT system and complete the mandatory NHS BCSP Bowel Cancer Screening Practitioner Programme (Level 6 or 7) at John Moores University, Liverpool, which may require you to study away from home. In-house training and mentorship will be provided to fulfil the requirements of the role.

Potential applicants should be a registered general nurse with proven post registration experience. Previous experience and knowledge of working in the following areas is desirable but not essential: screening, gastroenterology, endoscopy, pre-assessment or oncology. Good IT skills are essential as the post includes daily data entry into a national database.

The team comprises of a Programme Manager, Senior Specialist Screening Practitioner, 9 Specialist Screening Practitioners, Programme Co-ordinator and 3 Admin & Clerical Officers.

The Centre has been managing the screening programme covering the geographical area of Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin since 2009. The screening sites are at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and The Princess Royal Hospital, Telford. This service currently offers diagnostic tests for 54 - 74 years olds after an abnormal faecal immunochemical test (FIT) and surveillance for Lynch Syndrome patients. Over the next 2 years the service will extend the screening age down to 50 as part of the NHS Long Term Plan.

We are a very friendly, helpful team who strive to provide the highest standard of care for all members of the screening population who choose to participate in bowel screening.

We offer opportunities for further training and development and are always looking for innovative ways of further developing processes and practices.
