We are looking for applicants with experience in Stroke Medicine and acute and/or general internal medicine who have excellent team-working skills with the abilities/professional skills to work well in a multi-professional team.
This is an exciting time to be joining us as we are in the last stages of becoming a Comprehensive Stroke Centre. We provide an active acute thrombolysis service supported by telestroke out of hours, and we are also the neuro-interventional centre for the region providing neuro-interventional thrombectomy procedures for patients.
This is initially a 12 month appointment, with the possibility of an extension after satisfactory review. The post is to work as a Clinical Research Fellow within the Stroke Medicine within the Division of Medicine with an on-call commitment currently on a 1 in 10 rota, which may change depending on developments. There is a cross cover requirement for unexpected leave or sickness.
The appointee will have an Honorary Senior Research Fellow appointment at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) in the Faculty of Health and Care and will be required to contribute to teaching of Medical Students and Nursing and AHPs. The appointee will be responsible to the Consultant/s and University supervisors to whom he/she is attached.
Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust forms one of the major acute trusts in the Northwest of England with all of the usual specialties on site, as well as being a Tertiary Centre for Lancashire and South Cumbria in the Departments of Neurosciences, Nephrology, Oncology, Plastic Surgery and Burns. Undergraduate medical student teaching commenced in 2003.
As a part of the Medical Directorate at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Stroke Medicine is provided at both Hospital sites (Royal Preston Hospital (RPH) and Chorley & South Ribble Hospital (CDH) which serves a local population of 390,000).This proactive service consists of Hyper acute and Acute stroke services at RPH as well as an emergency TIA service and stroke rehabilitation at CDH.
The Stroke Medicine service is closely integrated with the Neurosciences Directorate, which provides regional neurosciences for a population of 1.5 million residents in Lancashire and South Cumbria. Services within this include:
- Regional Neuroscience led Stroke Interventional Service with provision of Vascular Neurology
- Neurosurgery, Diagnostic and Interventional Neuroradiology
- Neuro-critical Care and Neuro-rehabilitation
Initial appointment will be for one year. University registration will be for MD or MPhil (with option to extend and transfer to PhD). The focus will be on post-stroke complications and the topic needs to be discussed and agreed with the supervisors. Salary will be based on previous training, experience and proven ability to carry out clinical duties at Specialist Trainee level and research potential.
The appointee will have Clinical Supervision from the Hyperacute Stroke Unit, and Research Supervision from Professor Liz Lightbody, Professor in Stroke Care and Improvement, UCLan (DoS), Professor Hedley Emsley, Consultant Neurologist and Professor of Clinical Neuroscience, LTHTR & Lancaster University, and Professor Dame Caroline Watkins, Professor of Stroke and Older People’s Care, UCLan.
