**Job summary**:
The UK Defence & Security Exports (UKDSE) in the Department for Business and Trade is responsible for working with the UK’s defence and security sector to achieve export success and drive inward investment. The team works closely across Whitehall to deliver strong and coherent government support to industry. The UK is a leading defence and security exporter and building on our existing prominence in world markets is a priority for this government. The Operations Directorate within UK Defence & Security Exports works across the UK Defence & Security Exports team, and with Whitehall and industry colleagues to deliver that objective.

The UKDSE Assistant Head Events & SME Engagement is a high profile and challenging role, working internally across Department for Business and Trade and externally with senior executives in the UK business community, related Trade Associations and similar trade bodies as well as key government departments, including the Ministry of Defence, Home Office, Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and Cabinet Office. The post has overall responsibility for the strategy and successful planning and delivery of the annual UK Defence & Security Exports Events programme, ensuring delivery of a world class UK presence, which satisfies the stakeholder requirements of both HMG and UK industry. The post also leads UK Defence & Security Exports’ Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) support programme including the UKDSE Export Faculty programme and the management and oversight of income generation policy across UK Defence & Security Exports.

**Job description**:
Providing effective leadership and empower and develop the Events and SME Engagement Teams and UKDSE Export Support Team (EST) to ensure they are equipped to meet their objectives and reach their full potential. This will involve leading mixed teams of Civil Servants and Military Personnel.

**Events**
- Developing a new and innovative events strategy and the successful management and delivery of the agreed UK Defence & Security Exports annual programme of around 15-20 overseas events and exhibitions, ensuring a coherent, cost-effective, world-class UK presence. Development and implementation of larger, more cohesive UK Pavilions incorporating range of companies from Primes to SMEs under strong UK Brand identity incorporating where appropriate, innovative event presentation methods.
- The delivery of UK Defence & Security Exports /Ministry of Defence presence at the three main UK defence and security events - Farnborough International Air show, Defence Security Equipment International and the Home Office-led Security and Policing, including the successful management and implementation of the large, UK Government invited International VIP delegation programme at these Events.

**SME Engagement**
- Oversight and delivery of the UKDSE offer to UK SMEs including the continued growth and development of the UKDSE Export Faculty working in collaboration with the RDs, Security & Cyber Exports Team, EST, and the Civil Maritime Team
- Oversight and delivery of UKDSE participation at the smaller UK events e.g., DPRTE, DVD, SDSC
- Oversight and delivery of UKDSE Trade Mission programme
- Oversight and delivery of UKDSE engagement with DBT International Trade Advisors
- The availability to travel within the UK and Overseas is a requirement for this role
- Any other Duties that are required

**Essential criteria**
- Experienced leader who is comfortable developing a network of close contacts within industry and across wider Whitehall.
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Project Management qualification e.g. APMP or PRINCE2
- Experience of working in a commercially focused role and/or contract management
- Experience of working with SMEs
- Experience of leading mixed teams of Civil Servants and Military Personnel
- Either holding a minimum of SC security clearance or willing to undergo

**Desirable criteria**
- Experience of delivering large events, particularly in the defence and security sectors
- Knowledge of the defence and security sectors
- Dealing with the Private Sector and Trade Associations
