Post Doctoral Research Fellow

Plymouth, United Kingdom Plymouth University Full time

Applications are invited for a Post Doctoral Research Fellow at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences, to work on worldline approaches to strong field problems in gauge theories.

This position will contribute to the EPSRC Grants EP/X02413X/1 and EP/X024199/1, “Fresh perspectives for QED in intense backgrounds: first quantised techniques in strong field QED,” held by James P. Edwards (Plymouth) and Anton Ilderton (Edinburgh).

Research activities will be oriented towards the investigation of QED and Yang Mills theories in extreme environments generated by strong background fields. Exploiting and extending recently developed worldline techniques for strong field QED, the calculation of higher loop and higher multiplicity scattering amplitudes in gauge theories will be a central part of the project, with the aim of investigating non-perturbative effects and resummation within perturbation theory. The PDRA will work with James P. Edwards and the SFQED group at Plymouth (Edwards, Heinzl, King, Lavelle, McMullan), as well as with Anton Ilderton and colleagues at the University of Edinburgh, with which this grant is shared. This position is based in Plymouth.

You will have the following skills and attributes:

- Hold a PhD (or be near completion) in Physics, Theoretical Physics or Mathematical Physics.
- Experience in the worldine approach to quantum field theory or in strong field QED - additional numerical or computational knowledge will be desirable.
- Proven track record of delivering research results in an academic context (Peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations etc)
- Drive and capability to work independently, exercising a high degree of initiative and demonstrating a proactive and flexible approach to work
- Prior postdoctoral experience is desirable

Please demonstrate how you meet the essential criteria outlined in the knowledge, qualifications, training and experience elements of the job description in your supporting statement.

Interviews are likely to take place week commencing Monday 27 March 2023 and you will be notified if you have been shortlisted or not.
