We are seeking to recruit an experienced senior nurse with excellent leadership skills for the post of Head of Nursing for Workforce and Research to take forward the national and local workforce and research agendas with drive, passion, and enthusiasm. You will have a proven track record of building effective relationships and successful partnership working, and the ability to analyse complex data and present findings.

Reporting to the Deputy Chief Nurse (Workforce, Education and Research), the Head of Nursing for Workforce and Research will contribute to the development of the Trusts strategic approach to nursing and midwifery safer staffing. The postholder will be responsible for coordinating nursing and midwifery establishment reviews, developing and refining these processes in line with national guidance and adopting methodologies for determining safer staffing requirements. This will include responsibility for gathering, interpreting and presenting complex workforce and nurse sensitive indicator data and supporting the Deputy Chief Nurse to produce workforce reports.

As a highly visible clinical leader across the nursing workforce, the post holder will support the Deputy Chief Nurse and lead the implementation of a range of key workforce projects arising from the Trust’s People Strategy and reflective of the Nursing, Midwifery and AHP Strategy to ensure that patients are managed and cared for efficiently and effectively. The role will provide professional leadership and expertise regarding nursing and midwifery workforce methodology, working with key stakeholders on a national, regional and local basis.

The post holder will have management responsibility for the Research and Development Team and will work with the Deputy Chief Nurse to set the direction and develop the strategy for the Research and Development department within the Trust in line with the national research agenda. The post holder will establish mechanisms to enhance research capacity across the professions and create an environment that empowers nurses, midwives and AHPs to lead, participate in and deliver research as part of their job.

- Contribute to the development of the Trusts strategic approach to nursing and midwifery workforce planning, ensuring this is reflective of national strategy, regulatory and performance requirements.
- Develop effective relationships, networks, and partnerships internally and externally to understand influences and priorities for delivery of safer staffing requirements.
- Work with the Deputy Chief Nurse to ensure the Trust’s approach to determining staffing requirements for nursing and midwifery in line with best practice and national guidance.
- Analyse and interpret a wide range of complex workforce data and trend information to inform the Chief Nurse safe staffing establishment reviews.
- Contribute to the safe staffing reviews of nursing and midwifery staffing requirements to ensure the nursing and midwifery workforce supports the delivery of safe, clinically and cost effective and compassionate care.
- Contribute to the development of recruitment and retention strategies that enhance job satisfaction and career development for nurses, midwives and allied health professionals.
- Develop effective partnerships with key partners to foster a joined-up approach to nursing, midwifery and AHP recruitment and retention across the Trust.
- Support the development and maintenance of an accurate, detailed and up to date nursing and midwifery workforce profile for the Trust.
- Contribute to succession planning (staffing forecasts/projections) and recruitment strategies to ensure a professional nursing and midwifery workforce profile that meets patient and agreed operational demands and service structures.
