- Job description- Future investment in sluices, locks and weirs on the River Nene is a priority for our area teams. We are seeking a driven individual to deliver a strategy for sustainable asset and catchment management for the Nene Valley. This is a unique leadership opportunity to build knowledge with our partners and technical specialists, that will influence the River Nene for the future.
You will represent interests of the Environment Agency and partners that enjoy the benefits the River Nene provides. Working with the project team, you’ll instruct our consultants, review technical outputs, and direct the strategy development. Developing organisational relationships and funding strategies, you will secure partnership working and facilitate long-term decision making and change management to optimise asset life cycle management.
Nene Strategy enables us to maximise the benefits of the 140 sluice, weir and lock ‘structures’, and identify funding to deliver these benefits:

- Safe navigation
- Sufficient water supplies for homes and businesses
- reducing flood risk for local communities
- Economic growth
- Access to spaces that enhance health and wellbeing
- contributing to carbon reduction and biodiversity through protection of wetland habitat and associated fisheries.

You will work with and influence stakeholders and partners and guide the direction and culture of our teams. Use your expertise to guide operational teams and drive good practice, you’ll mentor and train the Welland & Nene ‘Partnership and Strategic Overview’ team.
You will be involved in:

- Developing strategies, including strategic option appraisal
- Securing funding
- Reviewing technical products including hydraulic modelling, natural capital, benefit and environmental assessments, and asset condition reviews
- Life asset management cycle
- Working closely with stakeholders
- Directing consultants and delivering through others
- Leading and inspiring evidence-based change
- The team- The Environment Agency protects and improves the environment. Acting to reduce impacts of climate change on people and wildlife is at the heart of everything we do. We work with government, local councils, businesses, civil society groups and communities making our environment a better place for people and wildlife.
You will work within the Partnership and Strategic Overview team, liaising with internal and external partners to drive change and enhancement for our region.
- Experience/skills required- This two year fixed term role is sponsored by the Anglian Northern Regional Flood and Coastal Committee, as part of a five year commitment to date.
Our goal is to achieve excellence in asset management. You’ll have experience within strategy or project management focusing on environmental outcomes. You’ll have experience of understanding flood risk, waterways, water resources and/or environmental economics, benefit management and developing business cases to direct capital investments. You’ll be a proficient influencer and negotiator. You’ll be confident in building relationships with external partners and internal teams and be committed to working collaboratively.
Be able to demonstrate:

- An appreciation of assessment management in relation to ISO5500,
- An understanding of the Environment Agency’s strategic and local objectives and responsibilities,
- Ability to develop and maintain good relationships with internal and external customers and partners,
- Ability to attract funding from a range of partners.

You will have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you.
