We are looking for mid and senior level Security of Supply Modelling Specialists to sit within the EMR modelling team. The team play a pivotal role in ensuring the energy security of Great Britain. We develop cutting-edge modelling to provide expert advice to Government on critical decisions related to security of supply, policy targets and future policy development.

These new roles will cover several exciting opportunities including:

- Leading the development of our Pan-European market modelling capabilities to provide insight on how interconnection influences system adequacy.
- Leading modelling on GB system adequacy during the challenging winter months to support the energy industries winter preparations.

You will have creative freedom to lead the development of new methodologies and enhancements that ensure our modelling and insight remains world leading and is fit for the future. You will also provide challenge and input to help steer the direction of a range of other projects across the team.

**About us**:
At National Grid Electricity System Operator (ESO), we’re aiming to operate a zero-carbon electricity system for Great Britain by 2025. This means using wind, solar and hydropower - without relying on any carbon-based generators to balance the grid.

**Becoming the Future System Operator**

In 2021, government and Ofgem jointly consulted on proposals for an expert, impartial Future System Operator (FSO) with responsibilities across both the electricity and gas systems, to drive progress towards net zero while maintaining energy security and minimising costs for consumers. In October 2023, the Energy Act 2023 was passed, legislating for this Future System Operator to be created.

The ESO, including all of its existing roles, will be at the heart of the new Future System Operator. We will be taking on additional roles across vectors and sectors to create an organisation with a whole energy system mindset; enabling us to identify solutions to our energy system that are more sustainable, secure, and affordable for all.

The FSO will be set up as a public corporation with operational independence from government - bringing parties together to support optimised decision making and action. As now, it will be licenced and regulated by Ofgem through price control agreements. It is anticipated that the new organisation will be up and running in 2024.

**Key Accountabilities**:
Accountabilities will be split across available roles and will include:

- Lead the development and enhancement of our Pan-European market modelling capabilities to provide insight on the contribution of interconnectors to system adequacy.
- Lead modelling on the interplay between extreme weather events and electricity system dynamics to understand the role played in eliciting system stress events.
- Lead modelling and analysis for the winter outlook and engage with stakeholders and industry players to support their winter readiness.
- Lead modelling of key capacity adequacy metrics such as de-rated margin, loss of load expectation and expected energy unserved. Develop new adequacy metrics more appropriate for Net Zero and the changing energy landscape.
- Lead on security of supply modelling activities to assess the risks to security of supply during the transition to Net Zero.
- Lead the modelling of different supply and demand scenarios within GB and across Europe to assess risks to security of supply driven by uncertainty in future supply and demand patterns including those related to extreme weather.
- Building up our advanced modelling capability in PLEXOS, which has recently been deployed by the team.
- Develop roadmaps for long term modelling goals resulting in modelling frameworks that are fit for the future and deliver short and medium-term milestones enroute.
- Inform recommendations to Government to ensure policy targets are met
