**Job description**:
The Department for Transport is looking for an enthusiastic and capable Higher Statistical Officer to support a Grade 7 Statistician in delivering excellent data and analysis to support a growing agenda on the environmental impacts of aviation.

This is a unique role working closely with DfT policy and other analytical teams as well as a range of external stakeholders to develop the evidence base on aviation decarbonisation, emerging aviation technologies and the wider environmental impacts of aviation such as noise and air quality.

It is a particularly exciting time to join our team. The Department published its Jet Zero Strategy in 2022, setting a framework and ambitious plan of action for achieving net zero aviation by 2050. A key immediate focus will be to develop metrics to monitor progress against the targets in the strategy and publication plans to ensure public commitments on transparency are met.

**Responsibilities include, but are not limited to**
- Supporting the work to develop robust metrics to monitor the decarbonisation targets set out in the Jet Zero strategy, in consultation with DfT analysts, other government departments, and external stakeholders.
- Developing tools and methodologies to estimate and visualise the noise generated by aircraft activity at UK airports.
- Working closely with policy and other analysts to build the evidence base and provide analysis and advice relating to emerging aviation technologies and the environmental impacts of aviation, identifying and addressing key evidence gaps.
- Working with a range of new administrative and commercial data sources on aviation to produce innovative and impactful statistical products and dashboards to disseminate aviation environment statistics internally and externally.
- Embracing the use of coding languages (particularly R) and GitHub to improve the efficiency and reproducible of our analysis.

**About you**

**Additional information**

A minimum of 60% of your working time should be spent at your principal workplace, although requirements to attend other locations for official business, or carry out detached duty in another DfT workplace, will also count towards this level of attendance.

Occasional travel to other DfT offices (London, Leeds, Birmingham) will be required.

**Qualifications**:

- Please confirm you have one of the following professional statistical qualifications as per the usual requirements for membership of the Government Statistical Service:

- Have worked in a statistical/data science field and are able to demonstrate personal development in statistics/data science at the same level as a foundation degree/HND (Level 5) or
- Have achieved or on track to achieve a level 4 apprenticeship including at least 2 years in a statistical/data analysis field in government and are able to demonstrate personal development in statistics/data analysis.
