Physiotherapy Exercise Assistant

Taunton, United Kingdom Somerset NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Are you someone with a background of exercise provision looking for a new challenge within a dynamic, innovative, and supportive ward-based team?

An exciting opportunity has arisen within The Trauma & Orthopaedic In-patient Physiotherapy team. Most of the work will be with older people who have fallen resulting in a fracture e.g., fractured neck of femur (hip) but will include other trauma and elective cases where appropriate.

We are looking for an individual to help us enhance exercise provision on our wards by providing daily group and individual exercise programmes in line with the team aim of early mobilisation and rapid rehabilitation to expedite discharge. You will be working with other physiotherapy assistants and physiotherapists in a team environment. There is an expectation that you will provide training (within your scope of practice) to upskill the team with exercise provision as required. You will also work closely with the ward activities co-ordinators.

A weekend commitment of up to 1 in 6 weekends will be required. (Currently 1 in7)
- To provide group ward based exercise classes on a daily basis
- To independently assess, and practise where necessary, a patient’s mobility through a basic protocol based physiotherapy assessment and treatment (to increase strength, stamina and balance enabling normal function).
- To provide an appropriate ward based exercise programme tailored to individual needs due to injuries sustained if required
- To continually progress this group of patients who will predominantly be older people and not at their mobility or functional baseline.
- To ensure patients are safe for the next stage of their recovery be that at home, home with support or community hospital and have an appropriate personalised exercise programme to continue with when they leave the acute hospital.
- The post holder will be expected to work independently but have access to physiotherapists for supervision and for development of a specific treatment plan in appropriate situations.
- Assist Physiotherapists in individual physiotherapy treatment sessions.

As an organisation, the NHS offers a wide range of benefits including flexible working, pension contributions, market leading annual leave allowance, career progression, and regular conversations, not to mention our Blue Light Card and NHS exclusive discounts.

The benefits of working in Somerset include the idyllic countryside, with our areas of outstanding beauty and stunning coastlines. You will get to enjoy these perks whilst still only being a stone's throw away from bustling city centres like Bristol, Bath and Exeter and only two hours away from London.

There are excellent educational facilities in the area and, when compared to other regions, house prices are reasonable. You will experience the best of both in Somerset, the countryside and the cosmopolitan - there is truly something for everyone

The post holder will join a team of physiotherapists specialising in trauma and elective orthopaedic conditions. This includes upper limb, lower limb and spinal conditions. The client group is predominantly of older people and therefore a special interest in rehabilitation of the Older Person is necessary for this post.

This post bridges the gap between that of a band 3 Physiotherapy assistant providing treatment progression by protocol and a band 5 Physiotherapist

Please see full job description and personal specification.
