The Assistant Practitioner Role:
The Assistant Practitioner role contributes to the core work of nursing, under the four pillars of HCSW practice, the assistant practitioner supports the registered nurse in the delegated planning, implementation, and evaluation of care for patients without direct supervision.
The Assistant Practitioner works under the four pillars of practice.

An Assistant Practitioner carries out specific care duties for patients, delegated by a registered nurse or other relevant professional. The specific tasks and competencies that an AP undertakes will vary depending on the specific healthcare environment and service need. The AP role will take on more advanced clinical skills and increase their skills and knowledge across all 4 pillars to support safe patient care with a person-centered focus after a period of education and training and evidence of competency.

What will I learn?
- Gain PDA in Acute and Community Care (SCQF Level 8) embed the learning into practice.
- Increase skills and knowledge within the remit of the HCSW 4 Pillars of Practice.
- Enhanced clinical skills and carry out delegated tasks within remit of the role and under supervision of a registered professional.
- Managing self & supporting others within a complex dynamic clinical environment.
- Provision of Enhanced Patient-Centered Care
- Critical Thinking and Escalation regarding safe patient care and standards.
- Ability to reflect on practice and identify improvements or opportunities to develop and learn.
- Maintaining skill and knowledge level in clinical competencies and core skills required at Assistant Practitioner level.
- How to address the equality and diversity needs of patients and staff.
What Qualifications / Qualities are required?
- Must have achieved education at SCQF Level 6/7 within a Health or Social Care framework.
- Commitment to undertaking and successfully achieving PDA Acute and Community Care (SCQF Level 8)
- Have a high level of resilience and self-motivation.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Evidence of providing Patient Centered Care within a Health or Social Care Environment.
- Evidence of working as part of a multi-disciplinary team in a fast-paced environment.
- Understand and possess the NHS Lothian Values: NHS Lothian Values
- Understanding of the HCSW 4 Pillars of Practice and commitment to working across all 4 pillars at an advanced HCSW level.
- Ability to carry out delegated responsibilities within a dynamic clinical environment.
