Band 6 Trainee Chaplain Advert

This position is offered at Band 6 Annex 21. The salary scale for the post is £37,831 per annum rising in annual increments to £46,100 per annum pro-rata. As a trainee your pay is determined as a percentage of pay for qualified staff, in accordance with Annex 21 of the Agenda for Change terms and conditions. As you are more than 2 years from completion of training you will receive 70% of the Band 6, maximum for qualified staff which equates to £32 270 per annum in year 1, in year two 75% which equates to £34,575. On completion of your training you will be placed on either the first pay point of the appropriate pay band or the next pay point above your training salary. The Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen within NHS Lothian Spiritual Care and Bereavement Service for a Trainee Chaplain. This post will be based pan-NHS Lothian.

The Trainee Chaplain will contribute to the work of Spiritual Care and Bereavement Services and will support patients, families and staff within NHS Lothian. The post holder will work as part of the team with Chaplains, Bereavement Specialists, Admin Officers and volunteers and will participate on the 24/7 on-call rota.

A 24 month structured programme of support education and learning will be provided including formal education.

Be educated to degree level and be eligible for entry onto the Postgrad Certificate Healthcare Chaplaincy (Glasgow University).

Have experience of providing pastoral support, counselling or active listening

Be able to demonstrate continuous professional development.

What we'll need you to bring

Educated to degree level or equivalent in a relevant discipline, e.g. theology, religious studies, healthcare, spiritual care.

Have experience in delivering spiritual care e.g. pastoral work in a faith community, chaplaincy, counselling, listening service.

Have a contemporary knowledge base of different religions and faiths and the ability to work harmoniously in an ecumenical/interfaith environment and with those from different life stance groups.

Have experience in making presentations, teaching or group facilitation.

Have a detailed knowledge of the Person Centred Wellbeing and Spiritual Care Framework published by Scottish Government in June 2023 together with a working knowledge of HDL (2002) 76 Scottish Executive Guidelines on Spiritual Care in Scotland, the data Protection Act, the Freedom of Information Act and the NHS Lothian’s policy on confidentiality.

It would be great if you also have

Training in Healthcare Chaplaincy such as CPE.

Facilitator in Values-based Reflective Practice (VBRP).

Trained in Community Chaplaincy Listening (CCL).

Experience of providing spiritual care or wellbeing support in a healthcare setting.

Knowledge of National documents pertaining to Spiritual Care and Wellbeing such as the Service Standards and Capability Framework.

Knowledge of current research in Spiritual Care, Bereavement and Wellbeing.

Demonstrate a clear understanding of the role of the Healthcare Chaplain or Bereavement Specialists

Ability and experience to perform research and audit.

Please note this is a part time post and the salary for this position will be pro-rata.

*Please note this is a Trainee post, therefore Annex 21 applies*

For trainees covered by Annex 21 where the period of training lasts for between one and four years, pay will be as follows:

- up to 12 months prior to completion of training: 75 per cent of the pay band maximum of the fully qualified rate;
- more than one but less than two years prior to completion of training: 70 per cent of the pay band maximum of the qualified rate of the qualified;
- more than two but less than three years prior to completion of training: 65 per cent of the pay band maximum for the qualified rate.
- more than three years from completion of training: 60 per cent of the pay band maximum of the fully qualified rate.

NHS Scotland is reducing their full-time working week from 37.5 to 37 hours per week from 1 April 2024 but with no change in pay. This reduction will also be applied pro rata for part time staff. This advert and any subsequent offer/contract of employment therefore reflects the new working hours. However, as not all service areas will be able to adopt the 37 hour working week immediately from 1 April 2024, you may be required to work up to an additional 30 minutes per week for a temporary period for which you would be paid until the service you are working in changes rosters or working patterns to accommodate the new reduced working week.
