Reading, United Kingdom Reading Borough Council Full time

Job description

An exciting opportunity has arisen in Highways & Traffic Services, where we are seeking an experienced **Street and Road Works Co-ordinator** to join our Network Services team. We require a keen individual with the drive and desire to help manage the demands of Reading’s Highway network, manage a busy workload and support the team. You will be leading a comprehensive street works and events co-ordination service for the Borough.

This will be a varied role, providing you with experience in a broad range of network management responsibilities and continuing opportunities to develop the team and make a big difference to Reading.

**About the role**:
Reporting to the team’s Network Services Manager, you will be leading the Street Works Co-ordination section of the Network Services team. Core duties will include:

- Building relationships with internal and external street works and event organisers, facilitating and co-ordinating occupations of the Highway for these activities
- Advising on impact mitigation measures for planned street works and events
- Leading on the strategic project to deliver a street works permit scheme for Reading
- Remaining informed of legislative and process options that could lead to improvements in our service offering to Reading and leading on the development and delivery of such initiatives.

These will need to be delivered in line with local and national Government regulations and standards.

You will be working alongside numerous departments across the Council, external contractors and event organisers, communicating and liaising with elected Members and members of the public.

As part of the role, you will also be supporting teamwide responsibilities including the support of intelligent transport systems (including operation of Reading’s Urban Traffic Management & Control centre). You will also be responsible for supervising our Co-ordination Technician, providing support and mentoring, and deputising for the Network Services Manager.

You’ll be part of a team that relies on each individual to play their part to the best of their ability. As well as the colleagues that you work closely with every day, you’ll also be part of Team Reading, playing your personal part in making Reading a successful and vibrant place. Our vision is to ensure that Reading realises its potential as a great place to live, work and play, and that everyone shares the benefits of this success. Our values and behaviours guide how we will achieve this:
**Work Together as one team** - champion and inspire a culture which ensures that all employees across the organisation work together to provide excellent outcomes for Reading

**Drive Efficiency** - create an environment in which resources are used efficiently and employees’ skills are developed and used effectively

**Be Ambitious** - aspire to deliver excellence and inspire and support others to reach their potential

**Make a Difference to Reading** - inspire a culture in which the customer is the focus and where change is welcomed as an opportunity

**About you**
- Excellent organisation, problem-solving and IT skills will be required for the role, in addition to excellent attention to detail.
- This will be a front-line role, so applicants will need to demonstrate good and positive customer service and communication skills via different media including face-to-face and written, which will include writing reports.
- You will need to network, building relationships and demonstrate good and positive negotiation skills.
- With staff supervision responsibilities, applicants will need to be able to motivate, support and encourage others.
- An understanding of relevant network management, parking and urban transport issues

The role will involve working outdoors as well as in the office. It will be preferable that the applicant has a full, clean driving licence, although the ability to travel using other transport modes will be encouraged. Some out-of-hours and flexible working will be necessary.

**Our offer**

We offer a supportive environment to grow and develop your career with the opportunity to put your ideas across. Innovation and ambition is strongly encouraged, and you’ll get a great feel for that working in our friendly and collaborative environment.

A competitive salary alongside a range of benefits including:

- Generous holiday entitlement - 25 days holiday each year plus bank holidays - rising to 33 days after 10 years' service, with the option to buy additional leave
- A wide range of flexible working opportunities
- Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS)
- Life Assurance - three times your annual salary (for members of the LGPS)
- Season Ticket Loan - a loan to help with the cost of your rail or bus journey, to and from work
