Job Introduction
Today is the most influential daily programme BBC News produces. It is the showcase for the BBC’s journalism for over six million weekly listeners. Our audience look to us to engage them with the most important stories in the UK and around the world, through the strength of our journalism, the creativity of our storytelling, and the excellence of our output.

Main Responsibilities
If successful in this role you will become a joint planning editor on Today. The team of Assistant Editors are vital to the effective running of the programme. We rely on our planning desk to devise our most engaging and high impact journalism - radio which calls on the hearts as much as the heads of our listeners and which makes a splash well beyond Radio 4. As a platform for the best of BBC News journalism, the planning editor has to build and maintain strong relationships across News. Audiences tell us that holding people to account is a vital part of the programme’s role and this requires constant care and attention. As a manager, Assistant Editors lead on significant areas of pastoral care and professional development and Today has a large staff working in a variety of on-air, production and support roles. Management tasks are shared out between Assistant Editors and Deputy Editors, under the direction of the programme editor.

Typical additional Assistant Editor duties might include:

- handling complaints,
- appraising and giving informal feedback to staff and
- working closely with presenters on specific editorial.

**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- To oversee the running of the Today planning team
- Commission reporting, drive planned original journalism which has an impact, including news making exclusive interviews
- Direct production of personal, cultural and “heart more than head” stories which are essential to balance on-the-day straight news stories
- To output edit individual editions of Today.
- To oversee the programme’s output while it is on air, ensuring that its interviews, packages, and choice of stories meet all Today’s expectations for quality as well as the BBC’s editorial and legal requirements, and that they are appropriate for the audience.
- To be responsible for the day-to-day running of the teams of presenters, reporters, producers and researchers and help give editorial drive and creativity to the programme as a whole.
- To recruit and deploy staff according to output demands and within budget.
- To assist in developing the strategy and agenda for the programme, to communicate and implement that strategy and to assist in leading the team to that end.
- Substantial experience of medium and long term planning for flagship daily news programmes including original stories and coverage which make a strong news impact
- Strong evidence of driving plans for original journalising and ensuring delivery
- Excellent ear for what makes good radio and track record of delivering creative and engaging listening - including commissioning reporting and other audio treatments
- Experience at senior level in engaging with stakeholders - story teams, commissioning group, other news outlets, non-news to make an impact with programme journalism and pick the journalism which works well on programme
- Ability to ensure strong digital treatments to go hand in hand with engaging radio coverage
- Experience in managing and getting the best out of high profile presenters
