One Garden Brighton is an award-winning tourist destination; a walled garden, rediscovered, reinvented and opened to the public for the first-time in spring 2021. It is proudly managed and presented by Plumpton College as a subsidiary of the Plumpton College Group. One Garden Brighton features contemporary themed gardens that include production gardens growing fruit and vegetables, One Kitchen, a place to eat and drink, One Market, a retail space complete with plant nursery, and One Events offering a wide range of activities and community events throughout the year.

Our Plant Nursery focuses on sustainable growing, using peat-free growing mediums, without the use of chemicals and is inspired by the plants we grow in our gardens. Around 70% of our plants are grown in our own small nursery and glasshouse. Following three successful seasons selling 20,000 plants each year, you will be integral to the continued development of our business, shaping and influencing one of Brighton’s leading tourist destinations. As **Plant Nursery Supervisor, **you will work closely with the Senior Gardener, Grounds and Gardens Team and will be part of the wider One Garden Brighton Team.

**THE ROLE**

We are seeking to appoint a dedicated and hardworking individual who can thrive in a competitive sector and deliver against ambitious targets for growth and quality.

You will be responsible for the day-to-day running of all aspects of our plant nursery from growing our plants from seed, cuttings, division and plug-plants to preparing them and presenting them ready for sale to our visitors. As both a community garden and a working horticultural college, part of your role will to be supervise volunteers and apprentices who will be assisting you with your work. Giving experience opportunities to our Horticultural students to assist in a commercial horticulture environment is also an essential part of their learning and working with our curriculum team is a regular role requirement.

As a sustainable nursery, you will need to pay particular attention to plant health, using chemical-free methods for controlling pests and diseases as well as managing effective watering and feeding schedules.

Effective planning skills will be essential to maximise our growing spaces to their full potential. You will be responsible for producing growing schedules, obtaining quotes and placing orders with our suppliers to maintain our sales stock levels.

Working with the Senior Gardener and Market Manager, you will monitor and evaluate relevant plant trends, including those within the garden, and seasonal opportunities in order to maximise sales. Our sales area for plants must be looking fresh and vibrant at all times and you will lead on presentation and stock maintenance in this area. Having good horticultural knowledge and outstanding customer service is essential as engaging with our visitors on plant suitability is a daily requirement.

As a commercial business, it is imperative that we keep accurate records of our stock holding and sales. Part of your role will be to record new stock made ready for sale, waste as a result of loss or damage and to complete monthly stock checks.

Although we strive to grow as much as we can in our own nursery, you will build strong relationships with our carefully selected local nurseries and suppliers, adhering to managed operating budgets, to order plants for sale, compost and growing supplies for the nursery. Wherever possible you will look to work cost effectively, seeking ways to minimise waste and re-use efficiently.

At times you will be required to assist with growing crops using our automated growing systems, such as our hydroponic grow towers and our controlled grow tent. As our business grows, you may be asked to work at our Plumpton campus where additional growing areas are used for stock production for One Garden Brighton

**THE TEAM**

You will report to the Senior Gardener and work closely with the Garden team, General Manager and One Market Manager. Although you will have no direct reports, you will be responsible for supervising volunteers, apprentices and students by sharing your own passion for horticulture and leading by example.

**ABOUT YOU**

Ideally, you will already have previous experience in a similar horticultural related industry. As a minimum, you will have a relevant horticultural qualification at Level 3 or above. One Garden Brighton is open every day throughout the year and Sundays/ Bank Holidays are our busiest times. You must be willing to work flexibly.
