The School’s research centres span cancer biology, clinical trials, health economics and medicines evaluation, ageing and dementia, and primary care.

North West Cancer Research Institute

Research at the North West Cancer Research Institute (NWCRI) at Bangor focuses around three pillars that align with the Wales Cancer Research Centre’s cancer research strategy for Wales (CReSt). These build on existing strengths of NWCRI to provide a space in which significant crossover and synergy between discovery science and translation can take place, and which form a platform for interactions between bench scientists and oncologists.

Cancer biology: Mechanistic cancer discovery research undertaken at the NWCRI has led to the identification of novel tumour cell vulnerabilities that can be exploited via the development of novel precision therapies. In relation to cellular repair of DNA damage induced by radiotherapy, research is focused on the study of the cancer cell response to therapeutic doses of radiation, and the identification of methods to improve radiation responses.

Clinical alliances : NWCRI has a track record of securing external funding to support clinical academic training in laboratory research. New opportunities will arise from linking with the Clinical Research Facility, integrating with other research centres with expertise in applied pharmacogenomics, and in the context of new programmes in medicine, pharmacy and pharmacology.
