The phlebotomy work consists mainly of taking blood from patients’ arms (Adults and Children) in the Wards and the Blood Taking Unit. Full training will be provided for all duties. It would be highly desirable if you have been trained as a phlebotomist.

Depending upon the location of work some or all of these duties will apply:
Safely handle potentially infectious blood, urine, human tissue samples, and hazardous chemicals on a daily basis.

Assist with the training of trainee biomedical support workers and trainee phlebotomists and perform competency assessment documentation

Attend all mandatory and statutory training.

Ensure that the workplace and workbenches are kept clean and tidy.

Maintain a flexible approach to the post in order to rapidly assimilate changes in workload, patterns and requirements.

Ensure that reagents are stored and used according to manufacturer and laboratory procedures.

Participate in Phlebotomy services as required including Paediatric Phlebotomy Clinic

Carry out appropriate daily maintenance on laboratory instruments and equipment prior to them being used for patient investigations.

Perform manual and automated laboratory investigations to Standard Operating Procedures.

Support the Biomedical Scientist staff in processing of samples.

Sort check and label samples when required.

Subject to competence assessment the post holder may discharge technical duties as part of a small team outside core hours to support the laboratory service.

Participate in effective stock control of reagents and consumables.

Enter patient demographics and technical laboratory data onto the Laboratory Information System.

Can label and request all samples from diverse screening programs.
