Taunton, United Kingdom Somerset County Council Full time

**Why should I choose Somerset County Council?**
Reporting directly to the Executive Director - Children & Families, Claire Winter, this post offers an opportunity to lead Children’s Social Care from its current Good grading to being Outstanding. You will be part of a council leadership team delivering “best in class” services to our residents and businesses, with vulnerable and disadvantaged children at its centre, as well as providing a single, strong voice for Somerset on the national stage.

**What will I be doing?**
As our Service Director you will work with Council Members, the Chief Executive, the Senior Leadership Team, and partner organisations, providing ambitious strategic vision, leadership and direction to, in particular, the Children’s Social Care elements of our Children and Families Directorate and the wider Somerset Council. You will also have a key part to play in developing the culture of the new unitary authority, ensuring that the people of Somerset are at the heart of our work.

You will lead children’s Social Care, being innovative and determined in further developing the service to do the very best for Somerset’s disadvantaged children. This will involve working with children, families, Councillors and other leaders to ensure that services and organisations are joined up and working together effectively. You will also ensure developed and integrated commissioning arrangements, where appropriate.

You will have overall direction of approximately 550 FTE employees across all elements of social care, as well as strategic oversight of the overall Children and Families budget - currently circa £123m per annum.

You will drive transformational, organisational and system change through building strong relationships, while leading a Service that delivers high-quality and cost
- effective services to the children and families of Somerset.

You will also promote and represent Somerset on the national and potentially international stage in line with the Council’s vision, values, and corporate plan.

**What kind of experience or qualifications do I need?**
To be successful in this role you will require the self-belief, confidence, and drive to succeed, necessary to overcome obstacles and achieve the best for our children and families. You will have a high level of personal integrity and be able to act as a role model and leader, capable of building teams, motivating and empowering others to work collaboratively in a complex and changing environment. You will be results-driven and able to take informed action today to shape the Council’s vision for the children who live in Somerset.

**What will I be offered in return?**
We are proud to offer an environment that is supportive and rewarding, working as part of a team who are passionate about the work they do to improve the lives of people in Somerset.

We offer great training and development opportunities, with supportive management. As well as this, we have some fantastic employee benefits available:

- We promote a healthy work-life balance and offer flexible working arrangements wherever possible, including working from home.
- Generous annual leave allowance, with the opportunity to purchase additional leave
- Staff discounts in gyms.
- Employee Assistance for the times you may need some support and a variety of employee wellbeing services.
- Auto enrolment onto our generous Pension Scheme and optional pension enhancement through our Additional Voluntary Contribution scheme.
- A Flexible Benefits Scheme via salary sacrifice to obtain a cycle for work and health screenings.
- My Staff Shop offering discounts in shops, online shopping, restaurants, cinema tickets, insurance benefits and more

**Anything else I should know?**

Interviews will take place 14 April 2023 at County Hall, Taunton.

From 1st April 2023 the County and District councils in Somerset will be replaced by a new single unitary authority - Somerset Council. It’s an exciting time to join us as we work together with the four district councils to deliver the new council for Somerset.

**DBS information**
In this role you will require a criminal background check via Disclosure and Barring Service.
