Due to the retirement of the current post holder an exciting opportunity has become available in the West Midlands. The Black Country Pathology Service (BCPS) is a mature network with modern state of the art equipment and a supportive senior management team. The laboratory information management system WinPath Enterprise is integrated with Ortho Swift analysers, Haemonetics blood tracking systems and CliniSys ICE requesting/reporting modules. The BCPS blood transfusion service processes approximately 115,000 group & screen samples and transfuses over 30,000 red cells per year. All transfusion activities are supported by a Consultant Haematologist clinical lead, team of transfusion practitioners and a dedicated pathology IT department.

The post holder will be responsible for the service delivery of the blood transfusion department for the Black Country Pathology services. This will involve a wide range of laboratory activities and the post holder will also provide expert technical guidance in the specified area of expertise (Blood Transfusion). As part of the senior pathology management team, the post holder will be responsible for the management, quality assurance, efficiency, effectiveness of service delivery and service developments for a specified service.

The post holder is required to support the BCPS Operations and Deputy Operations Manager in the delivery of a service that is compliant with HCPC, Blood Safety and Quality Regulations 2005, and ISO Standards pertaining to UKAS accreditation.

Work with the Hospital Transfusion Practitioners to ensure safe and cost-effective transfusion practice is embedded within the Network.
- Be responsible for the analytical work and to ensure that all designated tasks are completed in line with the Standard Operating Procedures of the Department.
- Provide specialised technical/scientific advice within the network.
- Be the responsible officer for compliance with National MHRA legislation.
- Responsible for the thorough investigation of all transfusion incidents across the network.
- Perform complex root cause analysis, identify causal factors and corrective actions to reduce future risk and communicate/ influence procedural improvements to all service users across the network..
- Advise on the submission of complex SHOT (Serious Hazards of Transfusion) reports to National office.
- Manage blood stock levels and ensure daily reports to the National Blood Stocks Management Scheme are submitted.
- Maintain laboratory records to ensure a complete audit trail of all blood and blood products used within the Trust.
- Initiate the Trust Emergency Contingency plan in the event of prolonged national blood shortage.
- Provide regular reports to the Hospital Transfusion Teams and Hospital Transfusion Committees
- Use professional-clinical judgement to assess the implications of patient results, in order to alert, support and appropriately advise requesting clinicians.
