This post offers an exciting and unique opportunity for a pharmacy assistant to have a predominantly ward based role. The post holder will have a significant role supporting medicines management within Children hospital including neonatal unit, working alongside a pharmacy technician and ward pharmacists. Training will be provided to allow the post holder to become confident in all tasks relating to the role including dispensing, medicines returns and ordering medications, homecare service support.

In addition, the post holder will have a crucial role in supporting timely discharge of patients. You will help maximise existing and new cost savings initiatives. You will be given opportunities for development. Feedback will be welcomed to shape the role and develop the service going forward.

You will respond to enquiries and requests from staff, and pharmacy colleagues and ensure appropriate and accurate information is readily available and to escalate questions and problems to other members of the pharmacy team when needed. You will be expected to form good working relationships with staff from all the different groups within Children hospital and beyond and work together as part of a team.
1. To improve the quality of care to patients in a clinical area by means of an efficient medicines management system. This will include providing original pack dispensing, near-patient discharge systems and stock management.

1. To provide a pharmacy service that ensures the safe and cost effective use of medications at a ward level.

1. To ensure a well-maintained ward stock holding, including review of stock lists as appropriate following discussion with ward manager, ward pharmacist and MMT.

1. To provide support to the ward technician(s) and pharmacist(s) to ensure medicines management, including safe and secure storage of medicines, return of medicines into Local Funding, and facilitating near-patient dispensing.

1. To work as part of the dispensary team to facilitate the efficient and effective discharge of in-patients from their clinical area out of the hospital environment.

6. To be an active member of the Pharmacy department and ensure continuous two-way exchange of information to maintain high standards with the Trust.

1. To work closely with the ward and dispensary teams to ensure the safe and timely supply of high-cost medications to the Childrens Hospital.
2. To ensure good stock management of high-cost medications to prevent wastage.
3. To use the pharmacy computer system and allocated stock to label and dispense, supporting near-patient dispensing alongside a technician or pharmacist.
4. To replenish and manage stock used for near-patient dispensing.
5. Maintaining equipment used in the dispensing process.
6. To work closely with the pharmacy top-up assistant in maintaining a well-controlled and appropriate medication and fluid stock holding.
7. To be responsible for the supply and delivery of any medicines required during inpatient stay according to the local procedures and guidance to reduce the number of missed doses.
8. Assist in the transfer of medicines between wards and locating medicines that have been left behind when patients transfer wards.
9. Dealing with problems associated with the ordering of stock on behalf of the ward or refer where appropriate, liaising closely with the relevant pharmacy staff.
10. To be involved in expiry date checking of ward stock.
11. To return unused medicines from the ward(s) back to pharmacy.
12. To ensure correct segregation and disposal of all types of waste such as cytotoxics both at ward level and in the dispensary.
13. To be an advocate for good communication between ward staff, pharmacists, medicines management technicians and the dispensary.
14. To undertake extended roles at ward level according to local Standard Operating Procedures, following a period of supervised practice.
15. To monitor and report any issues regarding the safe storage of drugs to the medicines management technician.
16. Photocopying, filing, scanning and faxing documents when necessary. Collecting and disseminating documents received within pharmacy. To collect essential documentation, such as working copies, on behalf of the pharmacist or medicines management technician, to support swift discharge of patients; to support Homecare service
17. To contact GP surgeries or community pharmacies as requested by other members of the pharmacy team to either provide or retrieve information relating to medicines management.
18. To provide training, including induction, to pharmacy support staff as required.
