Specialist Orthoptist

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join us at Southport and Ormskirk NHS trust. We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic full time Band 6 Orthoptist to join our friendly team of 4 Orthoptists, 2 Optometrists and 3 Ophthalmic Technicians. The post consists of 2 days (15hrs) permanent hours and 3 days (22.5 hours) on a 6-month fixed term contract. Part time hours maybe considered. You will be working closely with the Ophthalmologists, Optometrists, Nurses, Ophthalmic Technicians, and admin and clerical staff.

The Orthoptic department provides general adult and paediatric clinics including patients from eye casualty, neurology, stroke and special schools screening. As a department we are looking to expand additional skills to support the medical team. For this post, training for SLD clinics can be provided if required.

The Orthoptic service is a split site service based at Southport and Ormskirk Hospitals with outreach clinics at several community locations therefore the post holder will need the ability to travel between sites in a timely manner. Southport and Ormskirk are both located within travelling distance of Liverpool, Manchester and surrounding areas, and we have a number of staff who travel each day.

Professional development is encouraged, and full participation is required in clinical audit, departmental meetings and courses/seminars relevant to the role.

Applicants must hold a degree or diploma in Orthoptics and be registered with the HCPC.
- Provide professional, high quality, comprehensive and specialised Orthoptic services as an autonomous practitioner for Southport and Ormskirk Hospitals NHS Trust
- Responsible for the Orthoptic investigation, diagnosis, management and treatment of complex visual and ocular alignment problems using specialised examination techniques and equipment
- Accountable for all aspects of own clinical practice
- Provide clinical teaching of Orthoptic students, Pre-Registration Optometrists, Junior Doctors, Medical students, Nurses and Allied Health Professionals (student & qualified), Health care assistants and support workers in hospital and at outreach venues
- Work collaboratively and co-operatively with other clinicians to influence service development and ensure quality care is delivered
- To work as an active member of a multi disciplinary team providing Orthoptic expertise
- Undertake audit and participate in departmental research
