The role

The Centre for Welsh Language Services at Aberystwyth University wishes to appoint a translator with expertise in simultaneous translation to provide a written translation service to the University as well as an interpretation service to the University’s key committees and various other meetings. This is an exciting opportunity for an individual with experience of translation to support the University in operating bilingually and to achieve the objectives of the Welsh Language Standards. The translator will be expected to provide translations from Welsh to English, and also from English to Welsh. The balance between the written translation work and simultaneous translation will vary from week to week depending on demand. It is estimated that the translator will spend around 20% of their hours simultaneously translating.

Appointments are normally made within 4 - 8 weeks of the closing date.

What you’ll do
- To provide a professional written translation service from Welsh to English and from English to Welsh in accordance with the requirements of the Welsh Language Standards, for the University’s academic departments and faculties and professional departments.
- To provide a professional interpretation service from Welsh to English and from English to Welsh in accordance with the requirements of the Welsh Language Standards, for the University’s academic departments and faculties and professional departments. There will be a requirement to provide interpretation in formal and informal situations including meetings and interviews arranged by Human Resources, one-to-one meetings between staff and students, seminars, and public lectures.
- To familiarise yourself with the use of simultaneous translation equipment and systems.
- To be willing to work flexibly as required (e.g. in other locations except Aberystwyth University campus).
- To use the Translation Unit’s Translation Memory system and Workflow system effectively.
- To collaborate with a team of translators to ensure that the written translation work is prioritised effectively and that the service is provided on time.
- To provide simultaneous translation in meetings of a sensitive nature and to understand the importance of confidentiality in such situations. To translate documents of a sensitive and confidential nature and to understand the importance of confidentiality in these circumstances.
- To ensure the quality of the translation service provided and to use accurate and consistent terminology as used by the University.
- To consult with customers about the interpretation requirements, e.g. number of people present, equipment required, and nature and timing of event.
- To consult with customers regarding the content of documents sent for translation and to discuss deadlines.
- To work effectively with colleagues in the Centre for Welsh Language Services and with staff and students across all the University’s departments and to provide high-quality advice and support on linguistic matters.
- To commit to the requirements of the Welsh Language Standards.
- To undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post.

Essential
- Considerable experience of simultaneous translation.
- Considerable experience of translation, especially academic and administrative text and promotional and marketing material.
- Experience of dealing with content and situations of a confidential nature.
- Experience of using simultaneous translation equipment, translation memory systems, and workflow systems.
- Experience of working in a busy environment and under pressure.
- Thorough knowledge of Welsh grammar and the latest developments in the field of translation and the Welsh language.
- Knowledge of the Welsh Language Standards’ requirements in relation to translation and simultaneous translation services.
- Linguistic accuracy when using Welsh and English orally and in writing.
- Effective communication skills, and the ability to communicate well with a wide range of audiences.
