The Immunology department at Nottingham University Hospitals is excited to offer 2 apprentice Biomedical Scientist posts. This is a 4 year training programme with part time attendance at Nottingham Trent University undertaking a Biomedical Science degree and a formal qualification leading to HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist. This is an exciting opportunity to train and register as a Biomedical Scientist and undertake a degree whilst working.

You should be committed to a career in Biomedical Science and have an interest in the immune system and the disease associations.

Main duties of the job

There will be a bespoke training programme initially covering the basic requirements of laboratory work including sample handling, laboratory housekeeping, H&S, quality requirements alongside a huge variety of support tasks.

Throughout the training programme the individual will be exposed to the full repertoire of analytical tests performed in the lab and will be trained in setting up and maintenance of a variety of instruments, QC of assays, troubleshooting and training of other staff where appropriate. The instruments used in the laboratory are modern and cover a variety of techniques meaning you are working in a innovative and continually developing environment.

You will be working in a friendly team of staff including MLAs, APs, biomedical scientists, clinical scientists and medics. You will be part of a team contributing to the diagnosis and management of a wide variety of immunological conditions. These range from allergy testing, diagnosing autoimmune conditions through to rare defects of the immune system such as SCID. The department actively encourage CPD and there is a wide variety of internal and external training opportunities available.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Assist with all laboratory analyses associated with the post, maintaining analysers, appropriate records and documentation.

Undertake quality control procedures, examine quality control results to identify poor performance and instigate appropriate action.

Participate in the operation and routine maintenance of equipment.

Ensure that personal work activity is managed to make effective use of time and maintain an adequate supply of laboratory consumables, reagents and equipment.

Ensure the competent and efficient use of computerised data management systems.

Participate in the department’s training plan and all the NTU course requirements (lectures, practical sessions, exams, coursework). The expectation is 100% attendance at NTU for lectures and laboratory sessions.

Maintain ongoing NUH & NTU training records, gathering evidence and working towards completion of the IBMS Certificate of Competence (assessed in 4th year).

Assist with the development of new methods and the implementation of new technology.

Maintain standards of laboratory policies and procedures to ensure that the department meets National External Quality Assurance and Accreditation standards.

Assist with the production, maintenance and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures.

Ensure that safe working practices are followed in accordance with departmental Safety Policy.

Be aware of and adhere to Trusts policies, including those relating to discipline, grievance, sickness, absence and health and safety.

Ensure compliance with all statutory and legislative requirements including patient confidentiality and the Data Protection Act.

Work flexibly and undertake other duties commensurate with the grade as required.

Participate in and contribute to own Personal Development Review.
