The Cellular Pathology service at Liverpool Clinical Laboratories consists of multiple departments, including Histopathology, Immunocytochemistry, Molecular Pathology, Cytopathology, Ophthalmic Pathology, mortuary and bereavement services, medical examiners service and forensic pathology.

The directorate receives 65,000 cases per year and is the largest provider of specialist Cellular Pathology services within Cheshire and Merseyside.

The department consists of over 140 members of staff working together to deliver the specialist Cellular Pathology service for Cheshire and Merseyside. We also support clinical trials and research endeavours with regional, national, and international collaborators across clinical services, academic institutions and industry partners.

The department’s operating hours are 07:00 to 19:00 Monday to Friday and 08:00 to 16:00 Weekends and Bank Holidays.

The successful incumbent will be responsible for supporting clinical trial and research activity for the directorate, including:

- Specimen reception and archive duties such as receipt of specimens, filing and retrieval of paraffin blocks, filing and retrieval of slides
- Preparation of material for clinical trials and research as appropriate
- Assisting with tracking and invoicing research and clinical trial activity, as appropriate
- Taking receipt of deliveries
- Maintenance and audit of appropriate departmental consumable levels
- Maintenance of specialist departmental equipment

Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was created on 1 October 2019 following the merger of two adult acute Trusts, Aintree University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust.

The merger provides an opportunity to reconfigure services in a way that provides the best healthcare services to the city and improves the quality of care and health outcomes that patients experience.

The Trust runs Aintree University Hospital, Broadgreen Hospital, Liverpool University Dental Hospital and the Royal Liverpool University Hospital.

The post holder will be required to carry out duties relevant to a Medical Laboratory Assistant 3 research and clinical trial duties.

This post is essential for supporting the day to day running of the service’s research and clinical trial activity and ensure we meet our ambitions around delivery of increased volumes of collaborative research and clinical trial activity for the benefit of our patients.

To provide a support role to the qualified staff of the department which providing the research and clinical trial service to the Trust and other Pathology users, such as Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, The University of Liverpool, and other collaborators.

The post holder will be expected to work within the relevant Health and Safety policies of the Trust and adhere to all relevant activity and COSHH risk assessments.

Key responsibilities
1.1 Preparing samples for trials and research adhering to relevant protocols

1.2 Filing microscope slides, tissue blocks and relevant paperwork.
1.3 Retrieval of material from the archives.
1.4 Taking receipt of deliveries. Ensuring that the paperwork is completed fully and correctly.
1.5 To take delivery of cardice and other consumables as requested.
1.6 To safely store and monitor levels of consumables.
1.7 Move stocks to and from the consumable storage area as requested
1.8 Ensure the safe disposal of various groups of laboratory waste (paper, chemical, human tissues, glass etc)
1.9 Receive specimens into the department ensuring correct patient identification.
1.10 Store specimens safely and appropriately prior to and after processing.
1.11 To keep working areas in a clean and tidy fashion.
1.12 To complete the appropriate quality documentation as necessary.

1.13 To assist with the completion of invoicing and maintenance of departmental databases2.1 Adherence to the organisation’s health and safety policy, ensuring personal safety and to avoid putting others at risk.
2.2 To participate in the department’s appraisal scheme.
3.1 Use the departmental computer system as required.
3.2 Participate in meetings as required.
3.3 Ensure patient confidentiality at all times.
